Summary

Provide expert specialist knowledge and resources for care for women and birthing people with epilepsy during the antenatal, postnatal and intrapartum period. The specialist midwife works autonomously within midwifery practice in line with local defined practices Provide some aspects of intrapartum care to women where service needs allow. This aligns to providing personalised care and may be planned in collaboration with the multidisciplinary (MDT) team. Provide postnatal care to women with diabetes including sharing of relevant care of the next pregnancy information Provide continuity of carer during the antenatal period to a designated cohort of pregnant women and birthing people with epilepsy Provide targeted antenatal education to a designated cohort of pregnant people Lead on specialist midwifery- led antenatal clinics focusing on the care of women with epilepsy Lead of antenatal management plans for birthing attending specialist midwifery led epilepsy clinic For independent nurse/midwife prescribers, prescribe medications in line with local guidance and NMC code of conduct Perform ultrasound scan reviews, planning for care in line with local guidance Education for those pregnant people with epilepsy, with epilepsy specialist nurse support
