Summary

Multi-Skilled Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance Engineer

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £44,000 per annum

Hours: Monday to Friday | 7:00am – 4:00pm (1-hour lunch)

⏰ Overtime: Available when required

Position: Permanent

The Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Multi-Skilled Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance Engineer to join a well-established manufacturing business. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of production machinery, plant equipment, and building services.

This hands-on position would suit a proactive engineer with strong fault-finding abilities across both electrical and mechanical disciplines who enjoys working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

    • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) across production machinery and site equipment.

    • Respond promptly to reactive maintenance and equipment breakdowns to minimise downtime.

    • Diagnose and repair faults on:

      • Pumps

      • Gearboxes

      • Pneumatic systems

      • Hydraulic systems

      • Electric motors

      • Drives and inverters

      • Control panels

      • Safely isolate electrical and mechanical systems in line with Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.

      • Manufacture or modify mechanical components including brackets, guards and gaskets.

      • Replace faulty electrical and mechanical components efficiently and safely.

      Continuous Improvement

        • Identify root causes of recurring faults and implement long-term corrective actions.

        • Assist with the installation, testing and commissioning of new machinery and equipment.

        • Ensure all machinery complies with current Health & Safety and Environmental standards.

        • Maintain accurate maintenance records using the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

        • Support continuous improvement initiatives to maximise equipment reliability and production efficiency.

        Teamwork & Communication

          • Work closely with Production and Operations teams to schedule maintenance effectively.

          • Supervise and coordinate external contractors carrying out specialist maintenance work.

          • Escalate major engineering issues where necessary.

          • Support and train production operators on basic machine operation and routine maintenance.

          Candidate Requirements

          Essential Qualifications

            • Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or time-served qualification.

            • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or BTEC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

            • Previous experience working as a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer within a manufacturing, production or industrial environment.

            Desirable Qualifications

              • HNC/HND in Engineering or a related discipline.

              • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (preferred for electrically biased engineers).

              Skills & Experience

                • Strong electrical fault-finding skills including PLCs, three-phase systems, motors, relays and drives.

                • Excellent mechanical maintenance experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps and gearboxes.

                • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.

                • Competent using electrical testing equipment and mechanical hand tools.

                • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.

                • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

                • Flexible approach to overtime when required.
