Summary
Thepurposeofthispostistocollectdataandprovideresearchsupporttothe researchteam.Theteamrecruitandsupportpatientsintrials,andtheresearch assistantplaysacrucialroleinsupportingthenursesinthecollationanddeliveryofqualitydatageneratedinthesetrials,andcontributestoaconsistentlyhighstandard of care for participants within research studies.
Theassistantwillbeexpectedtoperformavarietyofaudit,clericalandresearch dutieswithinaresearchenvironment,aidingtheConsultantandResearchNursesto maximise the effective use of their time.
Itisanticipated that the individual post-holder will meet the following requirements of thepost;
§ Previousexperienceinresearch
§ The ability to work independently to plan, organise and manage own workload.
§ Tohavesufficientcomputerskillsforthehandlingandmanagementof computerised data
§ Toworkonadaily basis with minimal supervision as part of a research team.
§ Tohaveexcellentinterpersonalandcommunicationskills

§ Competentintheskills of venepuncture
Co-ordination & Communication
The post-holder will work as part of the research team under the supervision of theresearchnurses,andwillbeexpectedtomaintainthegoodworkingrelationshipsthe team has established with a range of individuals and organisations.
* Thepostholdershallasnecessaryprovidecoverforandundertakedutiesof absent colleagues.
The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation.

§ AssistResearchNursewithpatient’sstudyvisitsandclinicaltrialprocedures. This will include venepuncture, and vital signs (after appropriate training).
§ Collection,processing(includingcentrifugation,freezing,handlingofdryice)and shipping of biological specimens according to protocol requirements.
§ Co-ordinating courier collections for blood samples and documents.
§ AssistintheprocessofcompletingdataqueriesandotherCRFs(CaseReport Forms)documentationfortrialsponsors.EachCRFdiffersaccordingtoa specificprotocol.Thiswillinvolvecollectinginfor(mationanddatafrompatient records and inputting this data onto the CRF.
§ Access data/information from Trust information systems as required
§ Reviewingandupdatingprojectinformationonthedatabase,referringtothe researchers as necessary to validatethedetails
Running database queries and providing reportsasrequestedbyresearchers
§ Liaisedirectlywithoutsideagenciesandexternalbodiesi.e.Universitystaff, pharmaceutical representative’s etc.
§ Assistwiththeapplicationofethicalapprovalforresearchprojects,applyingto research ethics committees, and Trust R &Dapproval.
§ Maintaindatabasetotrackpatientactivityincludingpatientexpensesandother financial records
§ Deal efficiently with enquiries from otherdepartmentsorhospitals.
§ Arrange patient follow up appointments for researchspecificpurposes.
§ Dealwithenquiriesfrompatientsandtheirfamiliesinasensitive,professional and capable manner, reporting any concerns directly to the consultant
§ Todealwithanypatientcomplaintssensitivelyandsympatheticallyandto ensure that they are referred to the appropriate department without delay.
§ Tocarryout the collection of data, and accurate completion of researchdocumentationasappropriate,withmeticulousattentiontodetail
§ Arrangeinvestigations,follow-upandensurethatallresultsarepresentedto medicalstaffandaresubsequentlyfiledintopatient’smedicalrecordswithinthe agreed timescale.
§ Exerciseindependentjudgementandinitiativewhenproblemsarisebytaking appropriateactiontoresolvetheproblem,orbyreferringtheproblemtothe appropriate person.
§ Liaisonwithallstaffconcernedwithinpatientservicese.g.medics,nurses, admissionsstaff,medicalrecords,specialistnurses,hospitalmanagement,and other members of theresearchteam.
§ TomeetonaregularbasiswiththeseniornurseinR&Ddepartmentfor professional support and guidance
To attend training courses, conferences and study days in order to remain up to datewithallrelevantaspects of clinical research
§ Toattendresearchnetworkmeetings
§ Ensurethesafehandlingofnamedpatientandstudyspecificdataincompliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Computer Misuse Act 1990
§ To ensure that all clinical research activity is ICH GCP compliant and conducted in accordance with the agreed protocols
§ To maintain a high standard of patient care in line with Trust and Directorate policies and protocols and in accordance with the Research GovernanceFramework. To comply with ICH GCP
§ Ensure own actions contribute to the maintenance ofaqualityserviceprovision.
§ Compliance with Trust, Directorate and R&D policies and protocols
§ Assisting members of the research teamwithgeneralclericalduties.
§ Deal with postal & telephone enquires on behalf of theresearchteam.
§ Generaltypingdutiesincludingansweringletters,toinformGP’sofpatient’s involvement in a research study
§ Ensure all medical records are in a tidy andchronologicalorder.
§ Ensure that all filing is up to date andinaproperorder.
§ Retrieval of medical records, investigation reports, etc.
§ Other general clerical duties including photocopying, faxing, sort/distribute mail
