Summary

The Band 6 Mental Health Inpatient Dietitian will provide specialist dietetic assessment, treatment and nutritional support to adults admitted to Older Adult wards and Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) within Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will manage a complex caseload, deliver evidence-based nutritional interventions, support the management of malnutrition and obesity, contribute to physical health improvement, and promote recovery for people with severe mental illness. The role will also lead on nutrition screening, staff education, quality improvement initiatives, and service development to enhance patient outcomes and ensure high-quality, person-centred care.

The post holder will provide specialist dietetic assessment, treatment and nutritional support for adults admitted to Older Adult and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) services. They will independently manage a complex caseload, undertake comprehensive nutritional assessments, develop and review individualised care plans, and deliver evidence-based interventions to improve patients' physical health and nutritional outcomes. Working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, the Dietitian will support nutrition screening, weight management, oral nutritional support, discharge planning, and referrals to specialist services where required. The post holder will also deliver staff training, contribute to quality improvement and service development projects, supervise junior staff and students, and ensure accurate clinical documentation and audit in line with professional and Trust standards.

The post holder will provide a specialist dietetic service to adults receiving care within Older Adult and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) inpatient services, delivering evidence-based nutritional assessment, treatment and ongoing management for individuals with complex mental and physical health needs. The role includes independently managing a complex caseload, developing and reviewing person-centred nutrition care plans, monitoring outcomes, and providing specialist advice to patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team.

The Dietitian will work collaboratively with ward teams to improve nutrition screening, oral nutritional support, weight management and the management of long-term physical health conditions associated with severe mental illness. The post holder will contribute to multidisciplinary meetings, discharge planning and onward referrals to community and specialist services to ensure continuity of care.

The role also includes delivering nutrition education and training for clinical staff, developing patient information resources, supporting nutrition-related audits, and leading or contributing to quality improvement and service development initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes. The post holder will supervise junior staff and students, maintain accurate clinical records, participate in clinical audit and research activities, and ensure practice is delivered in accordance with HCPC standards, British Dietetic Association guidance, and Trust policies.
