Summary

The post will be based across NUH campuses or our partner outsourcing units and is designed to acquire specialist advanced endoscopy training and support the activities of the endoscopy and gastroenterology department.Thepost-holderwillworkalongsideavarietyofconsultantgastroenterologistsandGIsurgeons and will be responsible to the clinical leads in endoscopy and gastroenterology.
Thisisa one-yearpostspecificallyintendedforregistrarsapproaching theirCCSTorimmediate post CCST wishing to expand their endoscopy and research experience. Opportunities include training in therapeutic and advanced colonoscopy(e.g. advanced EMR, ESDexposure), enteroscopy, ERCP (including advanced imaging andtherapeutics, e.g.cholangioscopy),EUS (including interventionalEUS), Barrett’s endotherapy, upperGIendoscopicresectionandassuchismostsuitedtothosereachingtheendoftheirspecialisttraining in gastroenterology.
Clinical & Service Delivery
• Independently performdiagnostic upper and lower GI endoscopy(including clinics)
• Provideflexible cover for endoscopy lists, clinics, and inpatient procedures
• Undertaketriage and referral vetting
• Potentially carry outcapsule endoscopy reporting(depending on experience)
Multidisciplinary Working
• Attend and present atweekly MDT meetings
• Collaborate withradiology, surgery, pathology, oncology, and palliative care teams
Operational Support
• Work closely with theoperations, nursing, and admin teamsto ensure smooth daily running
• Supportreferral management and service coordination
Audit, Governance & Research
• Lead and contribute toclinical audits (JAG/GRS)
• Supportclinical governance and quality improvement initiatives
• Developguidelines and monitor quality indicators(e.g. procedure appropriateness, sedation, patient experience)
• Participate inresearch activities(with GCP certification)
Training & Teaching
• Provideteaching and trainingto junior doctors and clinical endoscopists
• Engage inongoing professional developmentunder an educational supervisor
Administrative & Supporting Duties
• Completepatient/service-related administrative work
• Contribute toaudit/research sessions

Asthe candidatewillalso be conducting serviceendoscopysessions(i.e.upperandlowerGIendoscopy and clinic) independently they will need to have achieved competency in diagnostic upper and/or lower GI endoscopy. Weekly attendance and presentation at the relevant MDTs will be expected with interaction with colleaguesfrom radiology, surgery, pathology, oncology and palliative care providing excellent exposure to complete patient management as well and upskilling in endoscopy.
Each successful applicant will be allocated an educational supervisor, whose role will be to support the development of a personal learning plan with SMART objectives to be completed within the year. The timetable will be confirmed with the educational supervisor dependent upon the competencies of the individual, timing of specialist sessions and needs of the service. Thiswill involve job planned sessionsin the evening and weekends as we look to maximise the use of our estate.
Therewillbe3sub-specialitytraininglistsinyourchosenareaeachweek.Theprimaryservice clinical duties of these posts is to provideflexiblecoverforendoscopy lists or clinic and to performinpatient endoscopicproceduresasrequired.Thepostwillthereforeincludeanaverageof5flexibleservicesessions per week (endosocpy, clinics, triage and referral vetting as required). There will be one session for audit/research and one session for patient or service-related administration work.
Depending on the post holders experience capsule endoscopy reporting may be required. The post-holder will be required to work closely with the operations teamfor the smooth running of the endoscopy unit on a dailybasisthat will require regularvetting of referralsand support the administration andnursing team. The work intensity will vary depending on the number of lists cancelled by other endoscopists.
The post-holder will also be committed to initiating, supervising and conducting a program of rolling audits (JAG/GRS audits) within the department as part of clinical governance requirements and to perform other tasks required to fulfil the criteria set by the global rating scale in endoscopy such as the development of guidelines. Examples would include audit of appropriateness of procedures, quality indicators, sedation practice,patient satisfactionetc.Therearestronglinkstoacademicmedicine withinthe departmentand the post holder will have the opportunity to participate in research in the endoscopy unit if desired. Candidates wouldbeexpected to have obtained the“Good ClinicalPractice”(GCP)certificationnecessarytocontribute in research before starting the post.
As well as taking an active role in all activities within the department, the successful candidate will also be expected to have a strong commitment to teaching, including the teaching/training of junior registrars and clinical endoscopists in endoscopy related activities.
