You will be a member of the Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology team, in NUH neurorehabilitation services primarily, and/or other specialisms as directed by the Head of Department. In the first instance this will be at the Linden Lodge Unit City Hospital, then move to the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) Loughborough during the summer of 2025. Your role is to provide highly specialist clinical psychology and neuropsychological assessment, intervention and advice, on the basis of advanced theoretical and practical knowledge, acquired through doctoral level qualification. This clinical activity will be direct to patients and/or their family, or working indirectly, to advise other staff (individually or as a group) how to manage highly complex cases. You will have patients allocated to you, and you will be responsible for managing their psychological needs, act independently, and be accountable for your professional actions. Your work will be with rehabilitation patients with various conditions, including brain injury and musculoskeletal injury. You will contribute to the teaching and training of staff within the multidisciplinary team, supervision of trainee Clinical Psychologists, and other students who are on work placement with the team. You will supervise the clinical work of Assistant Psychologist(s) within the service, in their work with your patients, and/or be their primary clinical supervisor. Assisting with the safe running of the ward alongside other members of the ward team to provide safe, personal and effective care to our patients. You must be able to work within a team and using your own initiative. You must be flexible, punctual and hard working. An understanding of the role and experience is preferable, but training will be provided. Working alongside a trained nurse to deliver safe, personal and effective care is the main responsibility but an enthusiasm to develop yourself within the role is desirable. Further knowledge of basic life support, physiological measurement recording, safer handling and equality and diversity are all areas in which experience is preferable but training can be provided for the successful candidate. There will also be an opportunity to further develop your knowledge with learning skills like venepuncture and cannulation if desired. At a highly specialised level, perform accurate and detailed assessments to diagnose and monitor peripheral arterial and venous disease of the lower limbs, upper limbs, abdomen and neck. These mainly involve the use of colour Duplex ultrasound according to departmental protocols but may also include other relevant test modalities 2. Take history and examine patients to ensure appropriate examinations are carried out 3. To produce clear and concise reports in a timely fashion immediately after the investigations have been completed 4. To report directly to the referring Consultant/clinician within an appropriate timeframe and arrange urgent assessment by the vascular team if patients condition warrants 5. Adhere to local and departmental infection control policy and procedures MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP 1. Accept delegated responsibility for agreed aspects of the day-to-day running of the VSU to both ensure effective service provision and broaden personal development 2. Deputise for the Chief Vascular Scientist when necessary 3. Continual assessment and prioritising of incoming referrals and planning of appropriate investigations 4. To assist in the development of initiatives in response to National and Local objectives 5. Have input in devising, evaluating and updating scanning protocols set by the Chief Vascular Scientist 6. The successful candidate will join 13 consultants, 2 honorary consultants, 8 SpRs and ACFs and 16 genetic counsellors; supported by a team of patient pathway administrators, a cancer triage team, a family history team and a growing team of genomic practitioners and associates to support mainstreaming of whole genome sequencing (WGS) across the region. The role offers an opportunity for an individual keen to provide clinics in general genetics, to participate in and lead MDTs and to develop a special interest which complements those of the existing team. While the post holder will spend most of their time at the OxGEM base located within the grounds of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital in Headington, clinics in other OUH Hospitals will be undertaken, and the appointee will be given responsibility forprovidinggeneralclinicalgenetics servicesto designated peripheral clinics or regions. Core aspects of the role include triagingofreferrals, seeingcases in clinic (which is currently offered as a blended approach of face to face, video and telephone consultations); offeringtelephoneor letteradvice to GPs and other colleagues; and follow up of genetic cases as appropriate by phone, or virtually by notes review and appropriate follow up activity. Other key aspects of the job include participation in multidisciplinary meetings with colleagues outside genetics to support the mainstreaming process, and engaging fully with OxGEM departmental meetings. Support to resident medical doctors in training: The Oxford Clinical Genetics service provides training for eight Specialist Registrar’s and ACFs. As one of the consultant team, the postholder will participate fully in clinical supervision and education of the trainees and fellows within the department. Out-patient clinics: An OxGEM consultant outpatient clinic would typically include separate lists for a consultant, an SpR and a genetic counsellor. Pre and post clinic support to the resident medical staff and genetic counsellor colleagues is provided by the overseeing consultant. Genetic counsellor led clinics are also well established. A 6 PA job plan would typically include 42 clinics per year, with a mix of new patients and follow-up cases. In-patient cover: Cover for urgent ward referrals and advice is provided on a rota basis with all consultants participating, approximately on a 1 in 7 basis. There is no out of hours on-call. Liaison with the genetics laboratory: The Oxford genetics laboratory is part of the Central and South Genomic Medical Service. Regular review of genetic test results with laboratory scientists is facilitated through weekly joint MDT meetings. Clinical Audit: The successful applicant would be expected to participate in medical audit. OxGEM has an active programme of regular departmental audit, and participates in South West of Britain (SWOB) regional audits and national genetic audits. Support of mainstream clinicians. OxGem is linked with the Central and South Genomic Medical Service along with Wessex and West Midlands. The successful applicant would be expected to participate in mainstreaming activities such as teaching and training mainstream colleagues and supporting return of genomic laboratory results.
