Role Purpose Lead the development and delivery of category strategy to grow profitability, optimise supplier terms, reduce costs and maintain product availability. Manage and develop the Trading Assistant while building strong supplier and stakeholder relationships. Key Responsibilities Develop, implement and review category strategy, ranges and supplier plans. Lead supplier negotiations to minimise costs, maximise income and manage commercial risk. Manage trading budgets, income targets, cost of goods and category profitability. Develop and deliver national promotional plans aligned with customer and market needs. Analyse market trends, competitor activity and commercial data to identify opportunities and risks. Monitor product availability, stock levels and supply issues, acting as an escalation point where required. Build and manage strong relationships with suppliers, distribution teams and senior stakeholders. Present recommendations and negotiate with senior stakeholders to achieve commercial objectives. Qualifications & Experience Essential Degree, equivalent qualification or higher education experience. Proven FMCG buying and/or selling experience, ideally within category management. Strong experience negotiating with and managing a large supplier base, with measurable commercial results. Experience managing product ranges, budgets and commercial targets. Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience preparing reports, presentations and commercial documentation for varied audiences. Proven experience negotiating and presenting to senior stakeholders. Experience working cross-functionally and managing multiple stakeholders. Successful delivery of projects to agreed timescales and budgets. Previous people management and development experience. Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. Desirable Retail or wholesale trading experience, particularly within food or fresh food. Experience developing and delivering trading strategies.
