This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of Physician Associates providing care for patients admitted to Trauma and Orthopaedics. The postholder will be part of a team of PAs working across different areas in the department; wards, clinic, theatres, etc. They will be working closely with Consultant of the week, Registrars and Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellows responsible for patients on the ward, including both elective and trauma patients. Dedicated sessions for clinic and theatre work will also be developed for the post holder. The PA team also lead the departments virtual fracture clinic alongside the on call consultant. The post holder will be required to provide assistance to the Consultant Surgeons and Specialist Registrars in the provision of high quality care within the department. They will be expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge, working within operating theatres, wards and outpatient clinics. The role involves being second on call with the registrars over night and weekend duties in a 1-9 week rota basis. Assess and examine acutely unwell medical patients, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigation findings, form a list of differential diagnoses and recommend treatment accordingly. • Active member of the daily consultant led ward rounds, presenting and reviewing patients based on the ward, and making timely and relevant documentation as appropriate. • Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to training/experience. (Including, but not limited to Venepuncture, Cannulation, ABG sampling, ECG, Catheterisation, NG tube insertion, Fracture reduction and Casting, Joint aspiration, etc) • Review, asses and admit patients alongside the registrar during out of hours shift, in resus, A&E, and urgent care. • Perform other tasks, not prohibited by law in which the physician associate has been trained and is proficient to perform. • Conduct virtual triage phone call clinics led by the on call consultant • Liaise and initiate referrals to other specialties, other hospitals and GP practices as necessary within their line of work. • Liaise with families and next of kin as necessary, to ensure excellent care is always provided for our patients. • Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries and support optimising bed capacity. • Support the pre-operative assessment of patients for surgery to ensure optimisation of patients’ health prior to admission for surgery. You will be assigned an assessor on the ward which you are based, who will support you as you embark upon your exciting journey at Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Whilst working alongside one our amazing teams, you will have the chance to develop and showcase these skills. Some of our HCAs have gone on to become Nursing Associates or Registered Nurses so the sky is the limit for you here in Bolton! Our hospitals are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our staff work on a shift basis to ensure our patients receive the very best care at all times. You may be required to work across a number of wards and departments across the Division on a rotational basis so this is a great opportunity to develop your skills and experience in a number of different clinical areas.
