REFJOB7347
Role outline
We are looking for a registered nurse to support the day-to-day clinical operation of our 24-hour medical advice line for rail clients. You will triage and screen incoming queries, giving safe, timely and clinically sound advice to rail employees and managers, and escalating where needed. You will also advise callers on needlestick injuries and other body fluid exposures.
This is a home-based role on a rota covering days, nights, weekends and bank holidays, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with 12-hour shifts. You will report to the Team Leader and work alongside our team of Senior Clinicians to deliver an exceptional service.
Key responsibilities
- Answer and triage inbound calls using agreed clinical protocols and decision-support tools, directing callers to the right outcome, whether that is self-care advice, GP, urgent care, emergency services or onward occupational health referral.
- Screen calls for health concerns that affect fitness for work, paying particular attention to safety-critical roles, and escalate to a senior clinician or occupational health physician when required.
- Give telephone advice on work-related and non-work-related health concerns, including mental health, wellbeing and support after traumatic or serious incidents.
- Recognise and respond promptly to emergencies, safeguarding concerns and risk of harm, following our escalation protocols.
- Meet the response and call-handling times set out in our clients' service level agreements.
- Make onward referrals into occupational health case management and follow up where a call needs further clinical input.
- Maintain your NMC registration and revalidation, work within your scope of practice, and keep your knowledge up to date through CPD and clinical supervision.
- Maintain strict confidentiality, in line with the Data Protection Act and UK GDPR.
Keep clear, accurate and contemporaneous records.
What we are looking for
- Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse
- Experience of telephone triage in a 24-hour environment, such as NHS 111, out-of-hours or urgent care and have used clinical decision-support or triage tools, such as NHS Pathways or an equivalent
- Experience of leading, supervising or acting as a senior clinician or team lead within a call-based service
- Strong clinical assessment, risk management and decision-making skills, with the confidence to escalate
- The ability to stay calm, prioritise and make sound decisions under pressure, and to work both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback
- IT literacy, with the ability to work at pace, keep high-quality records and maintain strict confidentiality
- Willingness to work flexibly across a 24/7 rota, including nights, weekends and bank holidays
Location - Homebased
Please note that this job advert is for remote working from home in the UK only.
