Summary
Perfect role for a mid professional looking to grow their PR & Communications career in Sheffield.
Internal communications has stopped being a nice-to-have. As companies scale fast and teams go hybrid, the gap between leadership and staff widens unless someone is actively closing it. This growing startup, part of a wider PR & Communications sector that's investing heavily in employee engagement, needs an Internal Communications Manager who can build that bridge from scratch and keep it standing as headcount grows.
Here's what you'll be doing:
Write and distribute internal updates, newsletters and leadership messages that people actually read
Build and manage an internal communications calendar across email, Slack and company-wide meetings
Partner with founders and department heads to translate strategy into messages staff can act on
Run employee engagement surveys and turn the results into visible changes, not just a slide deck
Manage crisis and change communications when the business shifts direction quickly
Support onboarding communications so new starters understand culture and priorities from day one
Here are the skills you'll need:
2-4 years' experience in internal communications, PR or a related communications role
Strong written English with the ability to switch tone between formal updates and casual Slack posts
Comfortable working with ambiguity. Startups change plans mid-week and the plan has to change with them
Experience using internal comms tools such as Slack, Notion or an intranet platform
Confidence presenting ideas to senior leadership without needing everything signed off first
Basic grasp of employee engagement metrics and how to read a survey result properly
Key perks and benefits:
Salary of £35,500 to £47,000, depending on experience
Hybrid working, with time split between the Sheffield office and home
Equity in the business, so growth benefits you directly
Flexible hours and a genuine learning and development budget
Flat structure. You'll speak directly to founders, not through three layers of management
Why pursue a career in PR & Communications?
PR & Communications has grown well beyond press releases. Internal communications now sits at the centre of how businesses retain staff, manage change and build culture that actually holds together under pressure. Sheffield has a growing cluster of ambitious startups and scale-ups, which makes it a genuinely good base for anyone building a career in this field right now. Get a few years in as an Internal Communications Manager and the next step, whether that's a Head of Comms role or something broader in People and Culture, tends to follow quickly.
