Summary
University of Sheffield
Are you passionate about shaping the next generation of eye care professionals? The University of Sheffield is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated University Teacher to join our Orthoptics and Ophthalmology team.
This is a pivotal moment for our department as we expand our educational offerings. In this role, you will play a key part in delivering our brand-new Orthoptics Apprenticeship programme while contributing to our highly regarded undergraduate BMedSci (Hons) Orthoptics degree and diverse postgraduate courses.
We pride ourselves on maintaining a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and welcoming environment. You will work alongside Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, medical fellows, and healthcare professionals across the wider School. We are a supportive community committed to excellence in both pedagogy and research, driven by the belief that world-class education directly enhances patient care, clinical services, and healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
-
Innovate & Educate: Deliver high-quality teaching, module design, and assessments across the new Orthoptics Apprenticeship and the undergraduate BMedSci programme.
-
Support Students: Act as an empathetic mentor and academic tutor, guiding learners through their academic and professional development.
-
Collaborate: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure our curriculum remains cutting-edge and aligned with modern clinical practice.
-
Contribute to Research: Engage with the division’s vibrant research culture, ensuring all teaching is informed by evidence-based practice.
About You
We are looking for an individual with a teaching-first mindset—someone who is as passionate about student success as they are about patient outcomes. You are likely an experienced Orthoptist or Optometrist who thrives in a collaborative academic environment.
The ideal candidate will be:
-
An Inspiring Educator: You excel at explaining complex ocular concepts, facilitating learning, and adapting your teaching style to support both apprentices and undergraduate students.
-
A Champion for the Apprenticeship Model: You value work-based learning and are excited to help students bridge the gap between academic theory and clinical practice.
-
A Multidisciplinary Collaborator: You enjoy working alongside a diverse team of clinicians and researchers, recognizing that the best care comes from collaborative learning environments.
-
Patient-Focused & Future-Facing: You are driven to improve the healthcare ecosystem through high-quality education and evidence-based practice.
-
Empathetic & Approachable: You foster a supportive, inclusive, and encouraging environment where every learner feels respected and supported.
