Summary
Make a real difference in a young person's life through positive relationships, emotional support and personalised learning.
Are you a patient, compassionate and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about helping children and young people reach their full potential?
We are looking for a dedicated 1:1 SEN Support Assistant to work closely with a pupil who requires additional support with their learning, emotional regulation, confidence and independence. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who understands the importance of building trust, creating a safe and supportive environment, and celebrating the small achievements that make a big difference.
The Role
As a 1:1 SEN Support Assistant, you will provide consistent, personalised support to help a pupil feel secure, engaged and confident throughout the school day. Your focus will be on building positive relationships, supporting emotional wellbeing and encouraging greater independence, while working closely with teachers and the wider school team.
Key Responsibilities
- Build a positive, trusting and supportive relationship with your assigned pupil.
- Provide tailored 1:1 support during lessons, activities and daily school routines.
- Help pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence.
- Support emotional regulation through reassurance, encouragement and appropriate calming strategies.
- Recognise signs of frustration, anxiety or emotional distress and respond calmly and sensitively.
- Encourage positive behaviour, communication and social interaction.
- Break down learning activities into manageable steps to promote engagement and achievement.
- Support pupils with transitions, routines and changes throughout the school day.
- Celebrate progress and encourage pupils to develop a positive attitude towards learning.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and other professionals to follow individual support plans.
- Promote a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment.
What We're Looking For
- A caring, patient and understanding approach.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- An interest in supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
- The ability to remain calm and supportive during challenging situations.
- An understanding of the importance of emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour support.
- Confidence encouraging pupils to become more independent rather than relying on constant adult assistance.
- Reliability, consistency and a genuine commitment to pupil development.
- A willingness to learn and adapt to individual needs.
Previous experience supporting children with SEN, Autism, ADHD or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs would be beneficial, although candidates with relevant experience in youth work, care, mentoring or other support roles are also encouraged to apply.
Why Apply?
- Make a meaningful difference through consistent, individualised support.
- Build valuable experience working with children with additional needs.
- Develop your skills in emotional regulation, behaviour support and inclusive education.
- Work alongside experienced education professionals.
- Enjoy a rewarding role where your support can have a lasting impact on a pupil's confidence and independence.
