Healthcare Assistants

Location: Milton Keynes and surrounding areas, including Buckinghamshire, Bedford, Northampton and Luton

Shift patterns: Day shifts, waking nights, sleep-in shifts and weekends, where required

About the role

We are recruiting experienced Healthcare Workers for care opportunities providing services across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas, including Buckinghamshire, Bedford, Northampton and Luton.

This is a varied, person-centred role supporting service users with different conditions, abilities and care requirements. Depending on service needs, your experience and assessed competencies, you may work across different care packages and locations rather than being assigned exclusively to one service user.

Main duties and responsibilities

Your duties will vary between care packages and will reflect each individual’s assessed needs. They will include:

• Providing personal care, including support with washing, dressing, oral hygiene, toileting and continence.

• Supporting nutrition and hydration, including assistance with eating and drinking and enteral feeding where required and authorised.

• Delivering complex care tasks in accordance with individual care plans, clinical instructions and your assessed competencies.

• Observing changes in a service user’s condition, recognising signs of deterioration and promptly escalating concerns to the appropriate person or healthcare professional.

• Supporting mobility, transfers, repositioning and pressure-area care using prescribed equipment and safe moving and handling techniques.

• Supporting medication administration in accordance with the care plan, the employer’s procedures and your training and authorisation.

• Supporting communication, emotional wellbeing, daily routines and participation in community activities.

• Maintaining accurate and timely care notes, medication records, monitoring charts and incident reports, as applicable.

• Following safeguarding, infection prevention and control, confidentiality and health and safety procedures.

• Communicating effectively with service users, families, colleagues and relevant healthcare professionals, including providing clear handovers.

• Working across different care packages and locations as reasonably required within the agreed employment arrangements.

Complex care skills and experience

Essential requirements

Applicants must have practical experience supporting people with complex care needs and be able to demonstrate competence across a range of relevant care tasks. Depending on the service user’s needs, these may include: • PEG care and enteral feeding. • Tracheostomy care, suctioning and airway support. • Supporting individuals using non-invasive ventilation. • Epilepsy care, seizure monitoring and responding in accordance with individual seizure-management plans. • Catheter, stoma and continence care. • Pressure-area care, skin observation and repositioning. • Supporting individuals with significant physical disabilities, neurological conditions or restricted mobility. • Using hoists and other moving and handling equipment safely. You do not need to have experience in every task listed. However, you must have relevant complex care experience, be willing to develop further competencies and be able to work safely across different care packages. Specialist tasks will be allocated only after your relevant training and competence have been verified or assessed, and any necessary service-user-specific training and authorisation have been completed. You must work within your competence and promptly seek assistance when required. Essential requirements Must have a full UK driving licence – Manual car licence preferred You must be able to demonstrate: • Previous hands-on experience providing care to individuals with complex needs. • The ability to understand and follow individual care plans, risk assessments and professional instructions. • Effective communication, observation, reporting and record-keeping skills. • An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, consent, dignity and professional boundaries. • A reliable, compassionate and person-centred approach. • The ability to work independently within agreed care arrangements and collaboratively with colleagues and healthcare professionals. • Flexibility to work variable rotas, including relevant day, waking-night, sleep-in and weekend shifts. • The ability to travel reliably to agreed work locations. • A willingness to complete relevant induction, ongoing training and competency assessments. Please explain your complex care experience and identify the tasks you have performed, together with any relevant training and competency assessments, in your application. Desirable requirements • A relevant health and social care qualification. • Current training or competency assessments relevant to complex care. • Experience supporting different service users or working across multiple care packages. • A valid UK driving licence. Manual UK licence will be an added advantage. Working arrangements This is a full-time role with variable hours and shift patterns. Work will be organised according to service-user needs, available care packages and agreed rotas. The role may involve supporting more than one service user and travelling to different locations within the advertised area. Your work locations, contractual hours, shift expectations and any applicable travel arrangements will be explained during recruitment and confirmed in your employment terms. Right to work and visa sponsorship Our client is not currently offering visa sponsorship or issuing Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) for this vacancy. Applicants must have permission to undertake the advertised work and hours in the UK without sponsorship. If you require sponsorship to take up this position, we are unable to progress your application for this vacancy. This advertisement does not include any offer, commitment or guarantee of future sponsorship. Pre-employment checks Any offer of employment will be subject to satisfactory checks appropriate to the role, including: • Verification of your right to undertake the work in the UK. • Employment references and relevant employment-history checks. • An appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. • Verification of relevant qualifications, training and competencies.
