Summary
A welcoming and inclusive school in Lambeth is seeking a caring Learning Support Assistant to work with pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). This hands-on role is ideal for someone who can provide thoughtful, respectful support with learning, communication and personal care, while helping each pupil feel safe, valued and included.
The pupils you'll support
You'll work with children with complex and additional needs, which may include PMLD, physical disabilities, communication needs and developmental delay. Some pupils may have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and need close, individual support throughout the school day.
You'll get to know each pupil's routines, preferences and ways of communicating. By offering consistent support and encouragement, you'll help pupils take part in activities and develop as much independence as possible.
What you'll do
Working alongside teachers, the SENCO and other support staff, you'll:
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support during learning and daily activities.
- Help pupils access classroom activities in ways suited to their needs.
- Support communication, interaction and engagement.
- Provide personal care with dignity, sensitivity and respect.
- Follow care plans and school procedures.
- Assist with moving and handling, following training and safe working practices.
- Support pupils through transitions and changes to their routine.
- Notice and share observations about pupils' wellbeing and progress.
- Work collaboratively with families and relevant professionals where appropriate.
Who would suit this role?
We're keen to hear from people with experience supporting children or young people with SEND, particularly those with complex needs. Experience with PMLD, personal care, moving and handling, physical disabilities or communication support would be useful.
You'll be patient, attentive and compassionate, and able to remain calm and reassuring throughout the day. You'll respect each pupil's dignity, communicate clearly with colleagues and understand the importance of consistent, individualised support. Relevant moving and handling or personal care training is an advantage.
What the role offers
- A full-time position in Lambeth.
- Competitive pay, depending on experience.
- Experience supporting pupils with complex needs.
- Guidance from experienced school staff.
- Access to professional development and training.
- Support from a dedicated education consultant.
Progress may mean engaging with a sensory activity, communicating a choice, building trust or taking part in a familiar routine. As a PMLD Learning Support Assistant, you'll help create the conditions for each pupil to feel comfortable, included and ready to learn.
