Summary
The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels. Obtain patient consent for the collection of a blood sample Perform venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols Maintain accurate patient records on the clinical IT system and ensure specimens are ready for onward transportation Ensure the correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies Ensure samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner Maintain effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff Work collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters Be an integral part of the general practice team Act as a chaperone as required Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins are replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy Work within national and local protocols where these exist Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding children Support the administrative team on an as-required basis Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.
