We are recruiting a Maths Tutor in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire for an alternative education provider supporting children and young people who are not in school. You will teach one-to-one maths sessions to pupils aged 5 to 18 – number work and times tables for younger pupils, Functional Skills and GCSE Maths for older students – at a learning centre near Huntingdon, at home visits and online. The role is full-time or part-time, up to 30 hours a week, Monday to Friday in term time. Travel time between sessions is paid and fuel costs are covered.
About the Setting
An established alternative education and mentoring service commissioned by local authorities to support children and young people aged 5 to 18 who are out of school. Pupils include young people who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion, children in care, and pupils with autism, ADHD, PDA or high anxiety around attending school. Sessions are one-to-one, delivered at home, in the community and at a local learning centre with classrooms, a kitchen and sports facilities.
The Role
- Plan and teach one-to-one maths lessons, from early number and times tables to Functional Skills and GCSE Maths
- Identify gaps in each pupil's knowledge and set short, achievable targets
- Use practical, real-life maths (money, measuring, cooking, sport stats) to keep pupils engaged
- Adapt lessons for pupils with autism, ADHD, PDA and maths anxiety
- Travel between pupils' homes, community venues and the learning centre
- Write a short report after each session and contribute to EHCP and PEP reviews
What You'll Need
- Experience teaching or tutoring maths, ideally including Functional Skills or GCSE
- Strong subject knowledge up to GCSE Higher
- Experience with SEND, alternative provision or disengaged learners (desirable)
- Availability Monday to Friday during term time, full-time or part-time
- A full UK driving licence and your own car with business insurance
- QTS is preferred for GCSE work but not essential – Functional Skills tutors without QTS are welcome
You'll be patient and upbeat, and good at showing a pupil who says they 'can't do maths' that they can.
