Summary
Are you a proactive and organised team player? Can you bring structure, energy, and a practical approach to a fast-moving environment? Would you like to develop your career within a growing and ambitious business?
Story Contracting North West is looking for a Design Coordinator to join our Chorley or Carlisle office. You will become part of a supportive and growing team, with the opportunity to build strong relationships, develop your skills, solve challenges, and contribute to the continued success of our projects and business.
The Role:
As a Design Coordinator, you will help coordinate safe, buildable, and well-integrated designs for our projects, supporting the design process from development through to Approved for Construction (AFC) issue.
You will bring together input from different disciplines, monitor design deliverables, and coordinate the resolution of interfaces and review comments with the responsible designers. Your contribution will help the wider business identify and manage design risks early, improve project certainty and reduce avoidable change and rework. By encouraging collaboration, maintaining clear design controls, and sharing accurate performance information, you will support better decision-making and help strengthen our reputation for delivering high-quality outcomes for our clients.
Key Responsibilities:
• Coordinate multidisciplinary design activities and deliverables for assigned projects, working with the Design Manager to support agreed programme, safety, quality, and client requirements.
• Maintain design deliverable schedules, responsibility records and action trackers, monitoring progress against key milestones and escalating delays, missing information, and outstanding decisions.
• Work closely with external designers, client, specialist suppliers, pre-construction, and delivery teams to identify design interfaces and coordinate resolution by the responsible parties.
• Coordinate design submissions, track review comments, technical queries, and requests for information, and follow up responses and actions through to close-out.
• Organise design coordination meetings and support interdisciplinary checks and reviews (IDC/IDR), preparing review information, recording actions, and monitoring their completion.
• Record proposed design changes and highlight potential impacts on scope, safety, cost and programme to the Design Manager and relevant project leads.
What We’re Looking For:
Essential:
• Relevant experience within design management or project delivery across construction, infrastructure, or engineering sectors; working with technical information and project teams.
• An understanding of drawings, specifications, and design assurance processes, with the ability to identify missing or conflicting information and seek clarification.
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records, track actions, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with project teams, consultants, and specialist suppliers.
• A proactive approach to identifying issues, improving processes, and supporting successful design outcomes.
• An understanding of health and safety in design, design risk and relevant industry requirements including the principles of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
• Confidence using excel spreadsheets and other digital tools to track information and progress, with a willingness to learn new project systems.
Desirable:
• A relevant construction or engineering qualification or apprenticeship.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design activities or collaborating with external designers, consultants, and specialist suppliers.
• Familiarity with Network Rail standards, procedures, and assurance requirements.
Why Apply?
At Story Contracting, we invest in our people. You’ll benefit from:
• Award-winning training and development opportunities
• Competitive salary, pension, and company car/allowance
• Health cash plan and wellbeing support
• Working from home (1 day per week) and agile working policies.
