Hours: Average 37 hours per week, working across a seven-day rota

Job type: Full-time

About the role

Net Zero Careers is supporting recruitment for a Volunteering Leader to help maintain and improve London's waterways and towpaths.

This is a hands-on, outdoor role combining practical maintenance work with volunteer coordination. You'll organise and lead volunteer groups, support the delivery of maintenance projects and help ensure London's canals remain safe, clean and accessible for local communities.

If you enjoy working outdoors, leading people and making a positive difference, this could be a great opportunity to develop your career in environmental operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and support volunteers carrying out practical maintenance activities.

  • Plan, organise and lead volunteer groups across the canal network.

  • Work with the Operations team to identify maintenance priorities and opportunities for volunteer support.

  • Ensure volunteers have the right equipment, training and guidance to work safely.

  • Coordinate activities and projects to maintain and improve waterways and towpaths.

  • Carry out practical tasks, including painting, site improvements, litter removal and fly-tipping clearance.

  • Support vegetation clearance, planned lock maintenance, minor repairs and water control activities.

  • Follow health and safety procedures and support risk assessments and safe working practices.

  • Communicate effectively with volunteers, colleagues and other stakeholders.

  • Complete relevant administration and help ensure activities are delivered safely and efficiently.

About you

We're looking for someone who is organised, proactive and confident working with people. You'll enjoy a combination of outdoor practical work, team leadership and day-to-day coordination.

You should have:

  • Experience working in a relevant environment, such as volunteering, environmental work, customer service operations or maintenance.

  • Experience leading or coordinating a small team.

  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of people.

  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

  • A self-motivated and flexible approach to work.

  • A commitment to health and safety and creating a positive experience for volunteers.

  • A

full UK manual driving licence, which is essential.

Experience with health and safety procedures, risk assessments, method statements, safeguarding, practical maintenance or volunteer coordination would be beneficial.

Working hours and on-call requirements

The role averages 37 hours per week across a seven-day rota, including weekends and public holidays.

You'll also take part in an operational on-call rota approximately one week in every five. This involves being available from 4pm to 8am on weekdays and throughout the weekend. A work vehicle will be provided to take home during on-call periods so you can respond to callouts.

The role is based in Docklands, London, with regular travel between sites. Public transport may be used where required.

Salary and benefits

  • Annual salary of £29,670 plus £4,000 Inner London Allowance, totalling

    £33,670 per year.

  • Competitive pension scheme.

  • Increasing holiday entitlement.

  • Additional employee benefits and wellbeing support.

Part-time, flexible working and job-share arrangements may also be considered.

If you enjoy working outdoors, supporting others and helping maintain important community spaces, we'd love to hear from you.
