Summary
We're looking for a skilled Communication Support Worker with BSL Level 6 or a relevant degree to support deaf and hearing-impaired students within an education setting in South Yorkshire.
Your role will be to help students participate fully in education - academically and socially.
That means understanding the learner, the educational context and how best to facilitate communication without unnecessarily taking over the interaction.
You'll work alongside teaching staff while maintaining a clear focus on the individual communication needs of the students you're supporting.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing specialist communication support using British Sign Language (BSL)
- Supporting deaf and hearing-impaired students during lessons
- Working 1:1 and with small groups
- Facilitating communication between students, teachers and peers
- Helping learners access teaching, discussions and classroom activities
- Adapting your communication approach around individual needs
- Supporting participation across the wider curriculum
- Encouraging confidence and independence
- Supporting social interaction where appropriate
- Working collaboratively with teaching and specialist colleagues
This isn't a position where a basic knowledge of signing is sufficient. We're looking for someone who can communicate confidently and effectively within an educational environment and understand the responsibility that comes with facilitating another person's access to learning.
You'll need:
- BSL Level 6 or a relevant degree
- High-level BSL communication skills
- Strong spoken and written communication
- The ability to adapt to different learners and situations
- Professional judgement and appropriate boundaries
- A patient, student-centred approach
- Reliability and good organisation
- The ability to work collaboratively with education professionals
Previous experience supporting deaf or hearing-impaired learners within education would be particularly valuable.
Great communication support shouldn't place another barrier between the student and everyone around them.
Where possible, you'll help learners communicate directly, participate independently and develop the confidence to advocate for what they need.
Sometimes your input will need to be highly visible.
At other times, good support means knowing when to step back.
That judgement is an important part of the role.
The position pays £23-£25 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Both full-time and part-time hours are available, with the opportunity to progress from a temporary placement into a permanent position.
You'll join a supportive and inclusive education environment where your specialist communication skills can have a direct impact on a student's ability to participate in learning.
Because access to education starts with being able to access the conversation.
If you're a qualified BSL professional looking for your next education role, we'd like to hear from you.
