Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, term time

Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting a Special Needs Science Teacher for a small specialist SEND school just outside Totnes in South Devon. You will teach science to primary and secondary-aged pupils with lower attainment, in classes small enough to get to know every learner well. Each lesson is built around something pupils can see, touch and try, whether that is a simple experiment, a sorting activity or a walk outside to look at plants and weather. Both secondary science teachers and primary teachers with good science knowledge are encouraged to apply.

About the Setting

This is a rural specialist school for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Its approach is relational and therapeutic, with strong relationships between staff and pupils as the starting point for learning. The curriculum blends classroom subjects with outdoor education, life skills and vocational pathways, and the school is FASD-informed.

Your Responsibilities

- Teaching science to small classes of primary and secondary pupils working well below age-related expectations

- Breaking each topic into short, concrete steps and revisiting key ideas regularly

- Running practical experiments and using visual and sensory resources

- Taking learning outdoors where it suits the topic

- Setting realistic targets and recording progress for each pupil

- Sharing planning and feedback with teaching assistants, therapists and pastoral staff

- Keeping a calm, predictable classroom where pupils feel secure

What You'll Need

- QTS is preferred; unqualified teachers and instructors with strong SEND experience will be considered

- Experience teaching pupils with SEND

- Skill in adapting science for lower ability learners at primary and secondary level

- A relational, patient and consistent teaching style

The school would like someone dedicated and nurturing, who enjoys planning creative ways to explain science to pupils who need more time.
