Summary

What skills and experience we're looking for

Beormund Primary School has been recognised as an outstanding Special School for children with complex social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Our pupils often struggle to regulate their emotions, to process language and expectations, adhere to social norms, build relationships and articulate their thoughts and feelings. We recognise that complex emotions, sometimes rooted in traumatic experiences, will often manifest themselves in dysregulated behaviours, rather than words. As a recognised and accredited Trauma Informed school we promote relational practice to support children with their behaviours.

Many pupils arrive at Beormund dissociated from school, mistrusting adults and with low self-esteem. Our team of emotionally available adults works with our pupils and their families to hold a positive view of themselves, build their self-confidence to take risks and reignite their love of learning. All children who attend our school make significant social, emotional and academic progress relative to their starting point.

Our ambition has always been to return children to mainstream schooling wherever possible and our planned move to a brand-new, purpose-built and enlarged school in Peckham in January 2027 presents a unique opportunity to both further this ambition and to play a key role in supporting Southwark’s emerging Primary Behaviour Strategy through outreach, training and satellite initiatives.

Building upon the solid foundations laid down by our current Headteacher, we are seeking to appoint an equally inspirational and experienced leader to take Beormund to the next level of its development and to influence and promote the inclusion of children with SEMH needs across all of Southwark’s primary schools.

If you share our ambition for children and our vision for the potential of Beormund School, please look at our website www.beormundschool.co.uk. Better still, come and see our school for yourself and find out more about our ethos and direction.
