Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Biobank Operations Manager to join our friendly team.  The successful applicant will have extensive experience within a Biobank or research lab environment and be confident in all aspects of sample management. Experience of managing staff and oversight of facilities and equipment is essential. Excellent interpersonal, motivational and communication skills are required for this role.        

The post will be cross-site (Chelsea and Sutton)  and cover a 7 month career break only. 

As the Biobank team looks to expand, the most suitable candidate for the post of Biobank Operations Manager, will have some experience and knowledge of 1 or more areas covered within Biobank teams remit. Namely research tissue banking, lab and facilities management and/or sample hosting/management services.

The post holder will:

• Lead the Biobank team working within Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and our Academic partner Institute of Cancer Research at both Chelsea and Sutton sites.

• Ensure the seamless delivery of the Biobank areas of work, with oversight and management of members of staff within the department across both sites.

• Provide leadership, drive, and innovative solutions to maintain governance support in the department and promote access to human tissue for research.

• Work directly with senior management to aid the Biobank Manager to design, develop and deliver the long-term strategy of the biobank to enhance governance and actively seek collaborations.

• Ensuring the collection of human samples is undertaken in accordance with the Human Tissue Act (HTA), and proactively support staff to progress their responsibility within the Biobank.

• Overseeing the collection and processing of blood and tissue samples from multiple clinical units and studies across the institutions. Overseeing the accuracy and quality assurance of the data held within the biobank, and on the STIMs system, to ensure consistency and compliance is met when recording and tracking each patient sample through the tissue bank or the Trust’s large clinical trial portfolio, as is deemed appropriate.

• The development of guidelines and standard operating procedures within the Biobank, as well as other relevant documentation to facilitate the most efficient transition from clinical teams to the Biobank team as appropriate.

• Develop and implement tracking systems for all samples coming through both locations of the department. Ensure all Biobank processes and procedures meet with the Trust/ICR SOPs, Human Tissue Act (HTA) requirements, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) UK Regulations for the department portfolio of commercial and academic trials.  

• Lead and have oversight of projects within the laboratory setting and be responsible for biobank team in the collection and processing of clinical samples (tissue and blood) from multiple units and sites across Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research.

• Lead the bio-specimen management ensuring good handling, processing, storage, governance and quality control of specimens. 

• Lead the development and updates of the biobank documentations including laboratory manuals, guidance documents, standard operating procedures (SOPs) in adherence with the current legislation on HTA, GLP and GCP in regard to all tasks undertaken for biological specimen handling, processing and storage.  

• Responsible for the data and quality management of all data under the biobank, in accordance with GCP, IG and QA guidelines and ongoing quality control procedures. 

• Overall oversight to ensure integrity of samples is maintained and samples are transported to an appropriate storage facility in a timely fashion.
