Summary

As physiotherapists we are key members of a multidisciplinary team geared to the rehabilitation of patients undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy in both in and outpatient settings.
Oncology provides a challenging environment for developing a number of skills including clinical reasoning, communication and multi-professional working.
The Band 5 Physiotherapist provides a high quality cost-effective physiotherapy service for the people with cancer. As a qualified practitioner, the postholder is a source of knowledge and expertise for patients, relatives and colleagues of all disciplines. With the support of the Band 7 and Band 6 physiotherapists, they will provide specialist assessment and treatment to adults in the acute setting with rehabilitation needs across the pathway of treatment and different tumour groups. The post holder will work as part of the physiotherapy team and wider MDT and will be supported and supervised by a Band 6 or Band 7 physiotherapist.

2. Key areas of responsibility
Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
2.1 To assess, differentially diagnose and manage adults with reduced physical functioning from cancer diagnosis and or/treatment under the support/ supervision of a senior Physiotherapist as appropriate.
2.2 To manage and prioritise a defined in-patient and out-patient caseload independently with support and supervision from more senior Physiotherapists, and to manage and prioritise own workload including balance between administrative and clinical duties.
2.3 Developing and implementing individual specialised therapeutic rehabilitation programmes specific to patients’ needs based on assessment using a patient-centred, evidence based, problem solving approach.
2.4 To commence competencies relevant to all rotations under supervision.
2.5 Developing and implementing treatment and educational groups for people with cancer and their carers.
2.6 To liaise effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues within and outside the Trust regarding patient management and service issues as required.
2.7 Liaising with multi professional team within the hospital and community, to achieve optimum rehabilitation outcomes and planned coordinated packages of support and care.
2.8 Maintaining contemporaneous and high-quality patient documentation as well as writing formal reports regarding patients’ needs and summarise proposed care plans, ensuring appropriate distribution of written reports.
2.9 To develop clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
2.10 To adapt practice to meet individual patients’ circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences and to work closely with interpreters where patients do not have English as their first language.
2.11 To develop empathy with patients, carers and families and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.
2.12 To identify the need for senior support in complex or challenging clinical situations and request this as necessary.
2.13 Utilising communication skills to support patients and their families sensitively and empathetically during times of emotional difficulty such as when discussing bad news related to deterioration in function and potentially poor rehabilitation prospects.
2.14 To assess the need for rehabilitation aids, including braces and collars, and demonstrate knowledge and use of these with patients as well as provide advice and education to patients and families regarding the use of these.
2.15 Participating in the implementation of appropriate clinical outcome measures in conjunction with the Service Leads to enable accurate measurement of the efficacy of the service.
2.16 Maintaining awareness of relevant and current research evidence, legislative and government guidance
2.17 Supplying and developing written advice and information to supplement therapeutic interventions in accordance with Trust policy.
2.18 Providing clinical caseload cover for other Physiotherapy staff during periods of absence.
2.20 Assisting in the collection and collation of data and publication of evidence through approved research and audit, e.g. publishing articles in recognised professional journals.
2.21 To provide education, information and advice to the patient, family members/carers and other health professionals regarding rehabilitation and make appropriate recommendations regarding management strategies.
2.22 In association with the Department of Professional Development, participating in visitors’ programmes.
2.23 Support Band 6 and Band 7 physiotherapists with supervision of pre-registration physiotherapy students in formal structured placements.
2.24 With appropriate training and competency framework, to take part in the on-call and weekend rota, working autonomously out of hours.
