Summary
Location: Chesterfield (S41)
Pay: £115-£130 per day
Contract: Full-Time | Long-Term to Permanent
Start: 5th October 2026
You've supported pupils in lessons. You've adapted resources, delivered interventions and helped young people through the moments when learning feels difficult.
Perhaps you're now ready for a role where you can take greater ownership of that support.
Long Term Futures is working with a large secondary academy in Chesterfield to appoint a Higher Level Teaching Assistant within its Foundation Learning provision.
Working closely with the Foundation Learning Lead, teachers and wider support team, you'll help pupils who need something more individualised to access learning, overcome barriers and make progress.
This is an opportunity to move beyond simply supporting what's happening in the classroom and become more actively involved in shaping how pupils are supported to succeed.
Not every young person finds the secondary curriculum easy to access.
SEND, gaps in learning, communication needs, confidence, emotional wellbeing or other barriers can all affect how a pupil engages with school.
That's where Foundation Learning can make a real difference.
You'll help identify what pupils need, break learning into manageable steps and provide targeted support that helps them build both academic skills and confidence.
Your role will include:
- Providing targeted 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEND and additional learning needs.
- Delivering interventions and structured learning activities.
- Adapting resources and approaches around individual pupils.
- Helping young people access the secondary curriculum at an appropriate level.
- Supporting literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum learning.
- Monitoring progress and feeding observations back to teaching staff.
- Helping evaluate interventions and identify appropriate next steps.
- Supporting pupils' social and emotional development alongside academic progress.
- Encouraging independence rather than creating reliance on adult support.
- Working closely with the Foundation Learning Lead, teachers and other education professionals.
You don't necessarily need to be an established HLTA already.
You might currently be working as a Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Specialist Support Assistant and feel ready to take on more responsibility.
HLTA status is desirable, but candidates working towards this level will also be considered.
You'll need:
- An NVQ Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, equivalent qualification or relevant education experience.
- Previous experience supporting young people with SEND in a school or education setting.
- GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills.
- A good understanding of the National Curriculum.
- Confidence adapting learning for pupils with additional needs.
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team.
- High expectations of what young people can achieve.
Most importantly, you'll understand that effective SEND support isn't about doing the work for a pupil.
It's about finding the support that enables them to do more for themselves.
This could be particularly valuable if you want to develop beyond a traditional classroom support role.
You'll gain experience working closely with a Foundation Learning Lead, delivering targeted interventions and taking greater responsibility for pupil progress.
That experience could support future progression into areas such as HLTA work, SEND, intervention, pastoral support, learning provision or other specialist education roles.
The position is initially long-term, with the opportunity to progress into permanent employment.
You'll receive:
- £115-£130 per day.
- Full-time, long-term work from October.
- A genuine route into permanent employment.
- Dedicated consultant support throughout your placement.
- Free CPD and professional development.
- Opportunities across mainstream, SEND, Alternative Provision and specialist education.
If you've built strong experience as a Teaching Assistant and you're ready for more responsibility, greater involvement in pupil progress and the opportunity to develop your career, we'd like to hear from you.
Informal MS Teams meetings are being arranged immediately.
Long Term Futures is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
