Summary

Clinical Fellow in Critical Care Medicine – Adult Critical Care Unit, Royal London Hospital

Applications are invited for Clinical Fellow posts in Critical Care Medicine at The Royal London Hospital (RLH), part of Barts Health NHS Trust, for trainees at ST4+ level or equivalent.

RLH is home to one of the busiest and most dynamic critical care units in London: a 44-bed general ICU/HDU on the 4th floor, alongside a further 12-bed post-operative surgical HDU on the 3rd floor. The unit manages a broad case-mix, including tertiary referrals in Neurology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Renal and Stroke Medicine, high-risk surgical patients, and major trauma, supported by London's HEMS base and a busy Emergency Department.

There are 2 types of posts. The first are 12 month long Specialist ICM posts with interests in either Trauma or Critical Care Follow up. The holders of these posts will receive dedicated clinical time to pursue projects related to these sub-specialty interests. The second are 18 month long CESR posts for trainees with significant experience in Anaesthesia (minimum 2 years) and Critical Care medicine. These posts offer the possibility to achieve documentary evidence in 11 of the 14 HiLos required for CESR accreditation in Intensive Care Medicine  with the GMC. The 18 months would include 12 months General, Neuro and Trauma Adult Critical Care on the Adult Critical Care Unit at RLH, 3 months of Paediatric Critical Care at the PICU in RLH, and 3 months of Cardiac Critical Care ate Barts Hospital.

Successful candidates will gain excellent clinical exposure across level 2 and 3 care, with structured opportunities for education, audit and research. Within this programme, fellows are warmly encouraged to enquire about dedicated sub-specialty fellow posts currently available, including Critical Care Follow-Up, End-of-Life Care, and Trauma Governance – each offering protected time to develop expertise and a project portfolio in these areas.

This is an outstanding opportunity for trainees seeking varied, high-acuity critical care experience within a supportive and academically active department.

The Royal London Hospital (RLH) forms part of Barts and The London NHS Trust. The ACCU (Adult Critical Care Unit ) is a 44 bedded critical care unit in the brand new hospital into which the Royal London moved in December 2011. The ACCU accepts referrals for medical and surgical patients requiring level 2 and 3 care. The hospital receives tertiary referrals for a number of Medical Specialties including Neurology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Renal and Stroke Medicine. In addition, there is a 12 bedded Surgical HDU for hi risk post-op elective admissions from surgical specialties such as hepatobiliary surgery, upper and lower GI tract surgery, major vascular, maxillofacial, Neuro and ENT surgery.

The RLH is the base hospital for the London’s Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and the NE London Stroke Referral Unit. The Accident & Emergency Department caters for over 100,000 patients every year.
