Are you a Teaching Assistant who wants to make a bigger difference to young people who find mainstream school hard? Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting an SEN Teaching Assistant for a small, specialist SEMH alternative provision near Shrewsbury.

About the provision

This is not a typical classroom. The provision supports 22 secondary-age students, with up to 8–10 on site each day. Students are referred by their schools for behaviour respite, emotionally based school avoidance or mental health support.

The day is built around three strands: physical activity (fitness training, boxing and sport), emotional wellbeing, and social skills and team-building. The site also has a forest school area, a fire pit and an art and mentoring space. The ethos is nurturing and restorative rather than sanctions-led.

The role

As a Teaching Assistant in this setting, you will:

- Support learning and engagement across the day's activities

- Work with small groups and individual students, adapting your approach to each young person

- Help students build emotional regulation, confidence and social skills

- Manage challenging behaviour calmly and with empathy, using de-escalation rather than sanctions

- Help keep the environment safe, consistent and positive, following safeguarding procedures
