The Role
We are supporting a respected local authority seeking an experienced Housing & Litigation Lawyer to join its Legal Services team on an interim basis. You will manage a varied and high?profile caseload across housing litigation, enforcement and advisory matters, providing clear, practical legal support to officers and members.
This role offers the opportunity to undertake meaningful work that directly impacts local communities, working within a supportive, forward?thinking legal team.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a varied caseload of housing matters, including possession proceedings, disrepair claims, debt recovery, anti?social behaviour and housing enforcement.
Conduct cases from initiation to conclusion, including drafting pleadings, taking instructions, issuing proceedings, preparing statements and instructing counsel.
Provide clear, practical legal advice to officers, managers and members on all matters arising from housing functions.
Represent the authority as advocate before the Magistrates’ Court, County Court, High Court and relevant tribunals.
Negotiate effectively with external stakeholders including government departments, public authorities, solicitors and members of the public.
Interpret, analyse and advise on new and existing legislation, ensuring colleagues are informed of legal developments.
Contribute to policy development, drafting reports and attending committees, case conferences and working groups as required.
Supervise and support junior legal and professional staff where appropriate.
You Will Need (Essential Requirements)
Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with strong housing litigation experience.
Proven advocacy skills and confidence representing clients in courts and tribunals.
Strong drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to manage complex and sensitive cases.
Ability to work autonomously, prioritise effectively and handle a varied caseload in a fast?paced environment.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, practical and solution?focused legal advice.
Desirable Experience
Experience working within a local authority or public sector legal environment.
Knowledge of private sector housing enforcement.
Experience delivering training or briefing sessions to officers or members.
Familiarity with digital case management systems and modern legal processes.
