Summary

This role is pro rata so the salary you will be receiving is £8,146.52 - £8,533.94 per annum. For any roles that start part way through the academic year, the annual salary will be pro rata to the remaining months.

The working da ys are Monday and Thursday. This role is aimed at persons who know British Sign Language at Level 2, or be a native BSL user having come from a deaf family/community.

BACKGROUND TO THE POST

The role of the Communications Support Worker is to ensure that all our students reach their potential and are not discriminated against. We wish to appoint a Communication Support Worker to Deaf/Hearing Impaired students to join our established, experienced team within our Centre for Deaf Students.

The main purpose of the post is to provide specialist support to deaf or hearing-impaired students within their learning programmes. The post holder will be part of the Inclusion Team and report directly to the Sensory Impaired Specialist Lead. The majority of time will be spent with students in the classroom providing Communication Support. The support aims to encourage the deaf student to achieve autonomy and as far as possible operate with independence within their environment to promote confidence and achieve success on their course.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Communicating using British Sign Language

● Performing the role of a Learning Support Assistant during class

● Note Taking, acting as a scribe during exams and lessons

● Supporting the students out of class (assignment work etc) and during extracurricular activities, such as educational trips or work experience

● Working closely with the curriculum to encourage inclusive learning

● Working closely with the Sensory Impaired Specialist Lead to plan and deliver a high-quality, professional service.

● Building glossaries of technical language for the student

● Promoting equality and integration of Deaf and Hearing-Impaired students

Develop, review and implement strategies during the academic year, using individual learning profiles and other college systems

● Communicate appropriate information to other staff including managers and course tutors

● Undertake record keeping and other administrative tasks, ensuring the confidential nature of the work as required

● Provide Learning Support to non-deaf students and visually impaired students when needed.

● To attend College delivered ‘Teaching Essentials’ training.

Essential Criteria

● GCSE Grade C or above in English and Mathematics, or Level 2 equivalent qualification, or willingness to work towards once in post.

● Level 2 or above qualification in British Sign Language or be a native

● BSL user having come from a deaf family/community.

● Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

● Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
