Summary

Duties Perform assessment of pre-operative patient care needs Assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care Maintaining accurate patient records and theatre documentation including use of SystmOne Work collaboratively with other members of staff to ensure patient care needs are met Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, carers/relatives and other departments Treat all information regarding patients as confidential Ensure patients journey through Surgical Department is completed in a timely and efficient manner Admit patients to the department, following agreed procedures and protocols. Perform baseline clinical observations, ensuring accurate completion of necessary documentation associated with the patient To ensure that the patients valuables and possessions are cared for in accordance with Practice policy Prepare equipment, instruments and items for surgical procedure, with an awareness to avoid cost inefficiencies Assist scrub nurse to maintain asepsis and the sterile field Assist in correct positioning of patient for their surgical procedure Participate in the completion of WHO Surgical Safety checklist for each patient Anticipate the needs of the scrub nurse and respond effectively To be competent to use routine equipment within the department following training by an appointed person. To report any concerns in the use of this equipment to a senior member of staff Observe the patient for signs of discomfort and notify theatre team. Using empathy and reassurance, support the patient Assist scrub nurse in instrument and sharps count and accurately document sharps on whiteboard Safely handle, record and dispatch specimens and used instruments in line with Practice protocol Participate in local decontamination and sterilisation procedures as per Practice policy Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations within your role boundary Ensure patient records and theatre documentation are maintained and that documentation reflects care provided Ensure safe storage of drugs, maintaining cold chain where appropriate Cleaning the operating theatre before, between and after operations, and participating in the deep cleaning programme, adhering to hygiene and infection control protocols Safe clinical waste and sharps disposal Report immediately to senior staff any incident, accidents or complaints and take any necessary action as instructed Assist the trained staff in the delivery of high-quality care to patients throughout their experience of the service, ensuring at all times that utmost regard is given to patient dignity, safety, values, individuality, religion and confidentiality. To be aware of and comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 Assist the trained staff in ensuring adequate stocks and supplies are available and to be responsible for ordering and maintaining items as delegated Assisting the administration team with general administrative work when no lists are scheduled Responsible for surgical consumables stock ordering Assist with the training and induction of new theatre team colleagues under the umbrella of the Practice Manager and Theatre Team Manager Be aware of Health & Safety risks and regulations affecting clinical practice Environment Support Ensure clinical area is prepared as appropriate to individual patient needs Maintain the work environment in line with the Practice Infection Prevention and Control and Health and Safety Policies Ensure equipment is well maintained and take appropriate action if the equipment is faulty Identify potential risk issues and report to your line manager and / or the Practice Manager Participate in all efforts to recycle surgical waste and dispose of in appropriate waste stream Professional Be aware of how to access Practice Policies and Procedures and comply with those relevant to role and clinical area Act at all times in a manner which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity and confidentiality Exhibit professional behaviour and attitude at all times Respect and value all people equally whatever their background or beliefs Act within limits of own competence, ensuring actions support care, protection and wellbeing of others Maintain responsibility for the identification of own continuing educational and development needs, including participation in audits of work practice Ensure all mandatory training is undertaken in line with Practice policy Participate, when requested, with investigations relating to incidents involving patients and staff Participate in team meetings Administration Assist the trained staff when required in the completion of incident form / significant event form in the event of an incident, accident or event involving patients, staff or visitors. Report and document accidents involving staff and patients according to established procedures and in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act Participate in the induction and orientation of newly appointed staff and other visitors to the Practice To provide cover for Reception/Administration team as required by business e.g. lunch time/non surgery days It is the responsibility of all employees to ensure that the requirements of the act are complied with, safe working practices are adhered to and hazards observed within the practice are reported to your line manager immediately Have full knowledge of fire precautions and regulations Infection Prevention & Control To observe best practice guidance in order to maintain high standards of Infection Prevention & Control. Adhere to all Practice Policies and Procedures relating to IP&C Safeguarding All staff have a contractual duty to identify, report, and record incidents of potential or actual abuse. This statement applies whether the victim is an adult or a child. The post holder must ensure they maintain the appropriate level of safeguarding training commensurate with their role. In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the jobholder may be required to perform other duties assigned by their line manager from time to time.
