Summary

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a centre of excellence for research, development, education, and care in the treatment of cancer.

We are currently looking for enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Staff Nurse for Private Patient Medical Day Unit and Outpatient department at the Royal Marsden in Cavendish Square.

This is offered as a one year fixed term basis. This role will not include night shifts or weekends. 

You will need to be a 1st level registered nurse, Demonstrable previous Oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy is essential. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable, however full training will be given.                       

In addition, you will possess excellent communication skills, be reliable, enthusiastic and an effective team member committed to providing the highest level of service for our patients.

The Royal Marsden Private Care is a dedicated private diagnostics and treatment centre located on Cavendish Square.  As a specialist cancer centre, Cavendish Square has the clinical expertise, facilities and technology to provide leading private care service.  Cavendish Square will link in with the Royal Marsden’s two other hospital sites, which are located in Chelsea and Sutton and a Medical Day Unit at Kingston Hospital.  

The band 6 registered nurse for Cavendish Square is an exciting role, which enables the delivery of care across outpatient and medical day unit ambulatory care settings.  The main roles and responsibilities include:

To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients. 

To have specific responsibility within Outpatient’s and MDU for those patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. This includes the administration of systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT).

To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals or plans. 

To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.

To complete the first level assessment of the patient’s needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met.  This will include:

Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment. 

Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.

Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.

To ensure that staff maintain and update patient documentation according to Trust policy. Encourage nursing staff to apply critical thinking through the process of clinical assessment of patients or problem solving and to effectively document this process in the nursing records.

To provide skilled care and in venepuncture, cannulation and accessing CVADs.  Assess patients for a suitable central venous access device and refer appropriately. To provide education to patients on the care and management of central venous access devices and to adopt a problem solving approach to managing complications with all vascular access devices. 

To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. There is an expectation for post holders: 

To promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff 

To participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators 

To assist with any local or Trust initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and safeguarding of high standards of care 

To be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that these are observed 

To help foster a positive, supportive working environment and maintain staff morale 

To work and support staff in the phlebotomy and Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) rooms, performing venepuncture and accessing PICC’s and Portacaths. 

Liaise effectively with members of the multi-Disciplinary health care team so as to achieve a co-ordinated specialist service across all Trust sites.
