Summary
About the role
We are looking for a Behaviour Mentor to work with children and young people who are at risk of exclusion from their school or struggling with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Unlike a classroom support role, this is a relationship-led, outcomes-focused position. You will deliver planned mentoring programmes, work through the root causes of behaviour and help young people build the skills to change it.
You will manage your own caseload, set targets with each young person and measure the difference you make.
Key responsibilities
Mentoring and intervention
- Manage a caseload of young people, delivering regular 1:1 mentoring sessions
- Build trusting relationships with young people who may be hostile to adult support
- Carry out initial assessments to identify triggers, barriers and underlying needs
- Set SMART targets with each young person and review them regularly
- Deliver structured programmes on emotional regulation, anger management, conflict resolution, decision-making, resilience and healthy relationships
- Run small group sessions and workshops
- Provide reintegration support for young people returning from exclusion, alternative provision or extended absence
Working with families and professionals
- Lead regular contact with parents and carers, offering practical strategies and support
- Attend and contribute to multi-agency meetings, including EHCP reviews, Team Around the Child, child in need and child protection meetings
- Liaise with the school, youth justice, CAMHS, social care, the police and community organisations
- Signpost families to appropriate external services
Prevention and risk
- Identify early warning signs of exclusion, exploitation, gang involvement, substance misuse and mental health concerns
- Contribute to risk assessments and safety plans
- Act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead contact where trained, and follow safeguarding procedures at all times
- Use de-escalation and, where needed, positive handling techniques
Monitoring and reporting
- Keep detailed case records, session notes and progress reports
- Track and report outcomes (attendance, behaviour incidents, exclusions, engagement)
- Contribute to reports for the school, commissioners and the local authority
About you
Essential
- Proven experience mentoring, or working 1:1, with young people with challenging behaviour (paid or voluntary)
- Experience carrying out assessments and setting and reviewing targets
- Confident communication with young people, parents and senior professionals
- Sound knowledge of safeguarding, including exploitation, county lines and peer-on-peer abuse
- Ability to stay calm and consistent under pressure
- Strong written skills for case notes and reports
- Ability to work independently and manage your own time and caseload
Desirable
- Level 3 qualification in youth work, counselling skills, mentoring, social work or similar
- Experience in a PRU, alternative provision, youth offending service or youth work setting
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice, attachment, autism, ADHD and SEMH
- Team Teach, MAPA or similar (training can be provided)
- Lived experience or strong knowledge of the Redbridge community
- Full UK driving licence
