Summary

To provide a high-quality and efficient phlebotomy service to patients registered at the practice, supporting the clinical team in the delivery of safe and effective care. The postholder will work independently to collect blood samples from patients, ensuring accurate labelling, recording, and timely dispatch of specimens to support diagnosis and ongoing clinical care. Key Responsibilities Perform venepuncture on patients in line with clinical guidance and infection control standards. Ensure samples are correctly labelled, recorded, and prepared for collection by the laboratory. Accurately update patient records on the clinical system (EMIS). Maintain equipment, stock levels, and cleanliness of the phlebotomy area. Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure a smooth and efficient service. Provide reassurance and information to patients, ensuring dignity, privacy, and comfort at all times. Report any abnormal findings, incidents, or concerns to the appropriate clinician or manager. Adhere to all practice policies, including infection control, health and safety, confidentiality, and safeguarding. Essential Skills and Experience Competency in phlebotomy, with evidence of up-to-date training and practice. Ability to communicate messages and instructions accurately to colleagues, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate good customer care skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the Multidisciplinary team, patients, carers and visitors. Ability to prioritise the care requirements for identified patients Basic skills of empathy and reassurance. Basic keyboard and IT skills Organise own day to day work tasks or activities. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Understanding of infection control and patient confidentiality. Accurate record-keeping and attention to detail. Desirable Skills and Experience Previous experience working in a GP practice or healthcare setting. Familiarity with NHS laboratory procedures and IT systems (e.g. EMIS). Basic Life Support and infection control training. Personal Attributes Compassionate, patient-focused approach. Reliable, punctual, and well-organised. Flexible and adaptable to the needs of the practice. Quality The post-holder will strive to maintain quality within the practice, and will: Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk Assess own performance and take accountability for actions, either directly or under supervision Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve performance Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients' needs Manage own time, workload and resources effectively Health & Safety The postholder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety, and security as defined in the practices Health & Safety Policy, Manual, and Infection Control Policy. This includes: Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines Identifying and managing risks involved in work activities. Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills Using appropriate infection control procedures and maintaining tidy, safe work areas free from hazards Actively reporting of health and safety hazards and infection hazards as soon as they are recognised Assisting in maintaining general standards of cleanliness within the scope of the role.
