Summary

Primary Teaching Assistant - Behaviour Support - Edgeware, London

A little bit about us!

Refine Education was built by people understand your side of the table - we know what a good agency relationship should feel like, and what it too often doesn't.

We're chasing the right fit, for you and for the schools we work with, with real transparency about pay, placements, and process from the first conversation.

What does a Primary Teaching Assistant (Behaviour Support) do?

A Primary Teaching Assistant specialising in behaviour support works closely with the class teacher and pastoral team to help pupils across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 manage their emotions, regulate their behaviour, and stay engaged in learning. This can include supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), delivering structured behaviour or regulation programmes, and using de-escalation and restorative approaches to help pupils re-engage positively with the classroom.

Do you need behaviour management experience?

• Prior experience managing or supporting challenging behaviour (in a school, youth work, or care setting) is highly valued, but formal qualifications are not always essential. Schools will often provide training in specific approaches such as Team Teach, Zones of Regulation, or restorative practice once you're in post. What matters most is a calm, consistent presence and a genuine understanding of what sits behind a pupil's behaviour.

Why work as a Primary Teaching Assistant (Behaviour Support)?

Gain Specialist Experience in Education

• Specialist Behaviour Skills: You'll gain direct, hands-on experience in de-escalation, emotional regulation, and behaviour intervention - skills that are increasingly in demand across mainstream and specialist schools alike.

• In-Demand Expertise: You'll build genuine expertise in reading early warning signs, applying consistent boundaries, and supporting pupils to reflect and reset after an incident.

Opportunity for Career Progression

• With experience, Behaviour Support Teaching Assistants can progress into pastoral lead, Learning Mentor, HLTA, or SENCO support roles - and this experience is a strong foundation for further study in SEMH, educational psychology, or youth work.

Experience, Training and Qualifications required for the Primary Teaching Assistant (Behaviour Support) position:

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with behavioural, social or emotional needs is desirable but not essential.

• Relevant training (eg. Team Teach, positive handling, Zones of Regulation, restorative practice) is a strong plus, but not required to apply.

• A calm, resilient, and consistent approach, with the ability to stay composed under pressure.

• Strong relationship-building skills and a genuine passion for supporting pupils' emotional wellbeing.

To be eligible for the Primary Teaching Assistant position through Refine Education you must:

• Hold Right to Work in the UK.

• Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application.

• Provide two professional references.

• Experience working within a behaviour or pastoral support role is an advantage, though full training and induction support is provided.

If you're calm under pressure, patient, and ready to make a real difference in young learners' lives, apply today to register your interest!
