Description:
An outgoing and friendly 18-year-old young man is looking for a Personal Assistant to support him in accessing social and leisure activities within the community and to promote his independence. The young man has Down Syndrome and speech and language difficulties. He has a cheerful, cheeky personality and enjoys getting out and about, taking part in a range of activities and visiting local attractions. Like many young people, he can occasionally be stubborn and may present with some challenging behaviour. He also experiences sensory difficulties and can be sensitive to noise and certain situations. Due to these needs, funding is available for two Personal Assistants to provide support together when required.
As a Personal Assistant, you will be required to provide support in a range of areas including, but not limited to:
• Encouraging independence and building confidence in social situations.
• Understanding and managing occasional challenging behaviour in a calm and positive manner.
• Recognising sensory sensitivities and adapting activities where appropriate.
• Accompanying and supporting attendance at activities such as swimming, trips to local attractions, the beach, activity centres and other interests.
• Supporting communication and helping the young man express his choices and wishes.
We are looking for someone who is patient, reliable, understanding, flexible and enthusiastic. Experience of supporting individuals with learning disabilities, Down Syndrome or additional needs would be advantageous but is not essential. A positive attitude and willingness to build a trusting relationship are most important.
The successful applicant should hold a full, clean driving licence and have access to a vehicle to support community access and outings.
This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
Shift Pattern:
Hours are available during both term time and school holiday periods.
• 6 hours per week during term time.
• 12 hours per week during non-term time.
Days and times are flexible and can be agreed between the employer and successful applicant. We are happy to work around commitments where possible and offer additional flexibility during holiday periods.
How to apply: Call 03000 413600 to ask for an application pack or alternatively you can email dprecruitment@kent.gov.uk quoting the above reference number.
