Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting for an enthusiastic and active Primary Teacher to join a supportive specialist education setting in Totnes, Devon.

This is a role for a teacher looking for something a little different from a traditional classroom environment.

Alongside teaching, the role involves outreach, outdoor learning, community activities, life skills and enrichment, giving you the opportunity to work with pupils in a variety of environments and help them develop both academically and personally.

The setting supports young people with SEND, SEMH, EBSNA and other barriers to accessing mainstream education, using a highly personalised approach built around individual interests, needs and aspirations.

A Different Kind of Teaching Role

If you're a Primary Teacher who enjoys getting outside, being active and thinking creatively about how young people learn, this could be an excellent opportunity.

The role can involve:

Teaching in small groups and on an individual basis

Outreach work with pupils who may struggle to access traditional education

Outdoor learning and practical activities

Community-based learning and local trips

Supporting pupils with life skills and independence

Sports, physical activities and enrichment

Creative and practical learning

Helping pupils re-engage with education

Building confidence through real-world experiences

You won't be spending every day behind a desk or teaching from a textbook. The focus is on meeting pupils where they are and finding engaging ways to help them learn and progress.

The Role

You will plan and deliver engaging, personalised learning for pupils with a range of SEND and SEMH needs.

Lessons may take place in the classroom, outdoors, within the local community or as part of an outreach programme, depending on the needs of the pupils.

You will work closely with the wider team to develop positive relationships, understand individual needs and create opportunities for pupils to succeed.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated learning

Support pupils with SEND, SEMH and barriers to education

Deliver learning in both classroom and community environments

Take part in outreach and alternative education programmes

Incorporate outdoor and practical learning into the curriculum

Support extracurricular activities, enrichment and life skills

Adapt teaching around individual needs, interests and EHCP outcomes

Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils

Encourage confidence, independence and positive engagement

Support pupils' academic, social and emotional development

Work closely with Teaching Assistants and the wider specialist team

Contribute to individual learning plans and progress monitoring

About You

This role would suit a Primary Teacher who is passionate, energetic and genuinely enjoys working with young people.

You might be an experienced Primary Teacher, SEND Teacher or SEMH Teacher — or a mainstream teacher looking for a more individualised and rewarding way of working.

We're particularly interested in teachers who are:

QTS qualified

Experienced in Primary education

Passionate about SEND / SEMH education

Active, energetic and happy working outdoors

Comfortable working outside the traditional classroom environment

Creative and confident adapting lessons around individual pupils

Interested in outdoor education, sport, practical learning or community activities

Patient, resilient and emotionally intelligent

Strong at building positive relationships

Flexible and willing to get involved in the wider life of the setting

You don't need to have worked in a specialist setting before. A strong Primary background combined with the right attitude and willingness to learn can be equally valuable.
