We are looking for an experienced Materials Controller to join a leading organisation within the rail rolling stock industry, based at their Stockport site.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in stores, warehousing, materials control or logistics who enjoys working in a structured environment and taking ownership of stock, materials and logistics activities.

As a key member of the depot operation, you will be responsible for ensuring materials are received, recorded, stored and dispatched efficiently, while maintaining accurate inventory records and documentation. This is a standalone stores-based position, offering the opportunity to take ownership of the day-to-day materials function and work closely with operations, procurement, suppliers and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Manage all goods-in and goods-out activities, both physically and electronically.

Maintain accurate stock records, material logs, system updates and supporting documentation.

Monitor stock levels and ensure inventory information remains accurate and up to date.

Coordinate the movement of materials, including deliveries, collections and repairable items.

Manage repairable materials and associated shipping documentation.

Liaise with suppliers regarding outstanding orders, deliveries and logistics requirements.

Expedite open orders to ensure materials are available when required.

Coordinate logistics with key suppliers and the local depot.

Organise and support periodic stocktaking and inventory audits.

Produce accurate reports and KPIs as required.

Carry out regular checks to ensure system stock information is accurate and aligned with physical inventory.

Support the Operations Manager, Procurement and Stores & Logistics teams with materials planning, stock control and project activities.

Raise orders through the relevant systems with approved suppliers as part of the purchasing and logistics process.

Participate in team and client meetings as required.

Carry out deliveries and collections to other operational locations when required.

Provide occasional support to stores activities at other project locations.

Assist with the implementation and maintenance of company procedures and processes.

Support the training and development of new starters and colleagues in stores, logistics and systems processes.

Ensure full compliance with Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental (HSQE) requirements.

Undertake other duties and activities as required to support the wider business.

About You

We are looking for someone who is organised, reliable and detail-focused, with the confidence to work independently and manage a busy stores and materials function.

You will ideally have:

Proven experience in a similar Materials Controller, Stock Controller, Storesperson, Warehouse or Logistics role.

Experience of maintaining materials or inventory records.

Experience using an ERP, stock control or warehouse management system.

Good computer literacy and confidence working with digital systems.

Strong numeracy and literacy skills.

Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.

Good communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with suppliers and internal teams.

The ability to coordinate and organise logistics with key suppliers.

The confidence to work independently, use your own initiative and prioritise competing requirements.

A flexible approach and willingness to support wider operational requirements when needed.
