Summary

This is a permanent vacancy and the job plan activities provided are subject to change based on service requirements.This post is a new post, tocompliment upper gastrointestinal team in managing benign upper gastrointestinal conditions, non-surgical upper gastrointestinalcancersand hernia services. There is close engagement withUpper gastrointestinal and Hepatopancreatic cancer services at Bristol Royal Infirmary. The job plan has a fixed pattern over a 12-week period and will be subject to review at 12 months. In an elective week, the post holder willprovide servicesincluding operating sessions, clinic, relevant MDT meetings, ward roundsand endoscopyand supporting professional activities. The postholder will performindependentlaparoscopicand open upper gastrointestinal and hernia procedures.There isadditionalworkparticipatingGeneral Surgery on-call rota providing care inemergency surgeryincluding colorectalresectionsand otherGeneral Surgical emergencies.

The upper gastrointestinal surgery is part of the GI surgery unit based in the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital, and comprises of 7 upper GI surgeons. This includes 4 specialist Bariatric surgeons undertaking the full range of surgery, including revisional surgery. The GI team is part of the rota providing 24-hour emergency GI surgical care at North Bristol NHS Trust. The postholder will manage major trauma cases when doing emergency general surgery on-call.

When on call, the on-call consultant is responsible for reviewing patients in same day emergency care (SDEC) and acute admissions from 1pm. Consultants do an evening ward round (4-5pm) on the day they are on call and a post take ward round at 08:00 the following day. On the day after on call, the consultant is responsible for the CEPOD list. The post holder will have no elective commitments when on-call. The emergency take has evolved over time in both volume and complexity. GI surgery provides a subspecialist upper and lower GI take with patient transfer between teams. We have a co-located medical and surgical SDEC unit. The surgical SDEC unit includes other surgical specialties such as urology and neurosurgery.

Each consultant will do regular week-day on-call with average 1 in 8 frequency and weekend on-call of 1 in 12. These frequencies are subject to changes with new appointments. On-call day to include SDEC and the CEPOD list on the following day. This model will be reviewed at 6-12 months.
