Educato Recruitment are currently recruiting for a SEMH Learning Mentor to join a supportive secondary school in Tonge, Bolton. This role would suit someone who is confident working with young people who may display challenging behaviour, struggle with emotional regulation or have difficulties engaging with mainstream education.
This is more than a traditional Teaching Assistant role. The successful candidate will act as a positive role model and trusted adult, helping pupils build confidence, develop emotional resilience and make positive choices.
The Role
You will work closely with pupils who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, providing consistent support both inside and outside of the classroom.
Building positive relationships will be at the heart of the role. You will need to understand individual pupils, identify potential triggers and help them manage their emotions and behaviour in a calm and supportive way.
You may support pupils who have experienced difficulties in education and require a consistent adult who can encourage them to re-engage with learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Acting as a positive role model and trusted adult for pupils
- Providing 1:1 and small-group mentoring support
- Building strong, positive relationships with young people
- Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and self-management
- Helping pupils identify and overcome barriers to learning
- Supporting positive behaviour and encouraging appropriate choices
- Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence
- De-escalating challenging situations using a calm and consistent approach
- Encouraging pupils to re-engage with lessons and school routines
- Supporting pupils who may struggle with attendance, behaviour or engagement
- Working alongside teachers and the wider pastoral/SEN team
- Supporting individual behaviour and development plans
- Helping pupils develop social and communication skills
- Providing support during lessons, transitions, break and lunchtime
About You

You may have experience as a:
- SEMH Teaching Assistant

- Teaching Assistant
- Pastoral Support Worker
You will ideally be:
- Calm, patient and emotionally resilient
- Confident managing challenging behaviour
- Naturally approachable and able to build rapport
- Consistent with boundaries and expectations
- Positive and encouraging
- Able to remain calm during difficult situations
- Passionate about helping young people succeed
- Confident communicating with pupils and staff
- Able to use initiative and think creatively
- A strong role model for young people
Previous experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour, trauma, anxiety, ADHD or pupils at risk of disengaging from education would be highly desirable.

Requirements
- Previous experience working with young people is desirable
- Experience supporting SEMH or challenging behaviour is highly desirable
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
- Two suitable references
- Right to work in the UK
- Commitment to safeguarding children and young people
