Summary
Year 6 is about much more than SATs.
It's the year children start preparing for one of the biggest changes in their education.
Yes, there are assessments to prepare for and academic gaps to close. But pupils are also becoming more independent, navigating friendships, developing confidence and getting ready to leave the familiarity of primary school behind.
A welcoming primary school in Stepney is looking for a Year 6 Teaching Assistant who can support pupils through all of it.
Working closely with the Year 6 teacher, you'll provide additional support across the curriculum, with a particular focus on literacy, numeracy and SATs preparation.
You'll work with individuals and small groups, identifying where pupils need additional explanation, practice or encouragement.
Some children may be aiming for greater depth and need stretching. Others may have gaps in their learning or additional needs that require a more personalised approach.
You'll help make sure those differences don't become barriers.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions
- Supporting English and maths learning
- Reinforcing key knowledge ahead of SATs
- Helping pupils develop effective learning habits
- Monitoring progress and feeding back to the class teacher
- Supporting children with SEND or additional learning needs
- Promoting positive behaviour and classroom engagement
- Encouraging good attendance, punctuality and readiness to learn
The academic work matters, but so does preparing children for secondary school.
You'll help pupils become more organised, resilient and independent, encouraging them to take greater responsibility for their own learning.
For pupils who find change difficult, you'll also provide consistency and reassurance as they approach the transition into Year 7.
That makes relationship-building an important part of this role.
We're looking for someone who can establish trust while maintaining clear expectations and boundaries.
Previous school experience would be useful, but relevant experience could also come from youth work, mentoring, tutoring, behaviour support or another role working directly with children and young people.
You'll need:
- Strong communication skills
- Confidence supporting learning individually and in groups
- A calm and consistent approach
- The ability to establish positive relationships with pupils
- Confidence supporting additional or more complex needs
- Good teamwork and organisational skills
- A strong commitment to safeguarding
Experience or training in ELSA, Thrive, Nurture, Drawing & Talking, Mental Health First Aid, Team Teach, counselling, youth work or behaviour support would also be valuable.
This is a full-time, term-time, long-term position in Stepney, paying from £110+ per day.
