Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Stroke team at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust as a 1 year fixed term maternity cover Senior Clinical Fellow. You will join a busy, dynamic multidisciplinary service within a major Neuroscience Centre, gaining valuable experience in the assessment and management of patients with acute and inpatient stroke. The role offers excellent opportunities to develop your clinical skills, contribute to clinical governance, audit and research, and support the education and development of junior doctors. You will work alongside experienced stroke consultants and a dedicated multidisciplinary team, with support for your ongoing training and career progression. We are looking for a motivated, compassionate and adaptable doctor with a strong interest in stroke medicine, excellent communication skills and a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality patient-centred care.

You will provide high-quality, patient-centred care within a busy Stroke service, working closely with consultants and the multidisciplinary team. You will assess and prioritise patients, contribute to timely diagnosis and management, and support safe patient flow across the Stroke service. The role requires excellent clinical judgement, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure and recognise when senior support is required. You will contribute to clinical governance, audit, research and quality improvement, while supporting the teaching, supervision and development of junior doctors. We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The postholder will provide clinical care to patients within the Stroke service, including assessment of acute stroke referrals from the Emergency Department and other hospital areas, under consultant supervision. Responsibilities include contributing to the assessment and management of patients who may require thrombolysis or thrombectomy, supervising the care of inpatients on the HASU and Stroke wards, and supporting safe and effective patient flow. The postholder will participate in the Stroke on-call rota, provide advice and supervision to junior doctors, and contribute to outpatient stroke services where required. They will participate in clinical governance, audit, research, teaching and quality improvement activities, maintain their continuing professional development, and work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and patient-centred care.
