Summary

An exciting opportunity based at the Lochaber Hope Community Hub, to work in our donation based cafe.

Location: Lochaber Hope Community Hub, Fort William

Contract: Permanent

Hours: 15 hours per week – Tuesday to Thursday, 10am–3pm, with occasional Saturday work (approximately once per month initially)

Pay: £13.45 per hour (real Living Wage)

Reports to: Project Manager and Project Coordinator

Start date: As soon as possible

PVG: A PVG check is required and will be arranged and paid for by Lochaber Hope

About the Role

We are looking for a friendly and practical Community Café Assistant to join our team at the Lochaber Hope Community Hub.

Our donation-based café is a welcoming community space where people can enjoy simple, good-quality food and spend time with others. The café project is run by our Project Manager and Project Coordinator, with support from the wider Lochaber Hope team.

This is a hands-on role focused on the day-to-day café service, food preparation, serving customers and helping us create a warm and welcoming environment.

You will need to be comfortable preparing simple food including toasties, sandwiches and jacket potatoes. Soup making and baking skills would also be helpful.

Alongside our regular café service, we occasionally provide simple catering for events held within the Community Hub. You will help the team prepare and serve food and drinks for larger groups, such as sandwiches, soup, cakes and hot drinks.

You don't need to be a chef, but you should be confident working with food, happy serving customers and comfortable getting stuck into whatever needs done during a café shift or event.

Role Responsibilities

Preparing and serving simple café food, including toasties, sandwiches and jacket potatoes

Helping prepare soups, cakes and other items

Making and serving hot drinks (training can be provided)

Serving customers in a friendly and welcoming way

Helping prepare and serve food and refreshments for occasional events and larger groups

Handling cash and card payments

Setting up and closing down the kitchen and café area

Keeping the kitchen, café and food preparation areas clean and organised

Following food hygiene and allergen procedures

Helping monitor stock and letting the Project Manager or Project Coordinator know when supplies are running low

Working alongside the wider Lochaber Hope team and volunteers to keep the café and events running smoothly

About You

We are looking for someone who:

Is comfortable preparing simple food

Has some experience preparing food in a practical setting, whether through a café, kitchen, catering, community setting or similar

Is friendly, approachable and enjoys working with people

Is reliable, practical and organised

Is happy moving between food preparation, serving customers and cleaning

Is comfortable helping prepare food for larger groups when we have events

Can work independently when needed while also being part of a supportive team

Understands the importance of good food hygiene and cleanliness

Enjoys working in a community environment

Soup making and baking experience would be an advantage, but isn't essential.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone dependable who enjoys working with food and people and can help us provide a warm and welcoming café service.

About Our Café

The Lochaber Hope Community Café is based within our Community Hub in Fort William. It operates on a donation-based model, helping make the café accessible to everyone regardless of their circumstances.

The café forms part of our wider Community Hub, which supports mental health and wellbeing and provides a welcoming, non-judgemental space where people can connect with others and access support.

As the Hub also hosts meetings, groups, training and community events, the café will sometimes provide simple catering and refreshments for these activities.
