Summary
Teaching in a specialist setting asks something different of you.
You may be teaching pupils working at very different academic levels within the same group. Communication may not always be verbal. A carefully planned lesson might need changing halfway through because a pupil is dysregulated, overwhelmed or simply needs a different approach that day.
For the right teacher, that's exactly what makes specialist education interesting.
We're recruiting an experienced SEN Teacher for a specialist education setting in Norwich, working with children and young people with a range of additional needs including autism, learning difficulties and behavioural or emotional needs.
This is a full-time role paying £195-£280 per day PAYE, depending on experience.
You'll be responsible for planning and delivering learning around the abilities, needs and individual outcomes of your pupils.
That means starting with the learner rather than simply starting with the curriculum.
You'll need to be comfortable adapting lessons, using different methods of communication and recognising that meaningful progress can take many forms.
Alongside classroom teaching, you'll:
- Plan and deliver differentiated lessons for pupils with SEND.
- Adapt teaching and resources around individual learning and communication needs.
- Work towards targets identified within EHCPs and individual learning plans.
- Assess progress and use this to inform future teaching.
- Work closely with Teaching Assistants to make effective use of classroom support.
- Use appropriate strategies to support behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Create clear routines and a structured learning environment.
- Collaborate with therapists, pastoral teams and other professionals.
- Communicate with families and contribute to reviews where required.
- Maintain appropriate assessment, progress and safeguarding records.
Specialist education is rarely delivered by one professional working alone.
You could be working alongside Teaching Assistants, SENCOs, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, pastoral staff and other specialists, with everyone contributing to a clearer understanding of what an individual pupil needs.
Being able to communicate, share observations and adapt your teaching in response to specialist advice will therefore be an important part of the role.
You'll need Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), or an appropriate equivalent teaching qualification, together with substantial experience supporting pupils with SEND.
The setting is particularly interested in teachers with experience of autism, learning difficulties and pupils who may present with behaviours that challenge.
You'll need strong classroom practice, but specialist teaching also requires flexibility. If a particular strategy isn't working, you'll need the confidence to change it.
Experience with EHCPs, adaptive teaching, specialist communication approaches, assistive technology or evidence-based SEND interventions would be valuable.
Most importantly, you'll need to understand that high expectations in SEND don't mean expecting every pupil to achieve in exactly the same way.
This is a full-time SEN Teacher position in Norwich, paying £195-£280 per day PAYE, depending on experience.
