Summary
The opportunity has arisen for a motivated individual to join the busy and dynamic lung cancer nursing team at The Christie. The post will involve offering administrative support to the team and to act as the first point of contact for patients and carers who access the service.
Together, with the established lung cancer nursing and medical multi-disciplinary team, the co-ordinator will aim to deliver a world class patient experience.
Many patients will be receiving treatment to control their cancer and often have supportive and palliative needs. Sign posting patients and their carers to appropriate services, and providing support lead by the nursing team is a fundamental aspect of the role.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience.
The candidate must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills as undertaking health needs assessments (HNA) with patients is an essential part of the role. They will also have a desire to encourage and promote best outcomes for patients, their relatives and carers.
The ability to work autonomously is paramount for this post together with confidence to engage and work with a range of colleagues at all levels and from all professional groups.
The successful candidates will be required to collaborate with all members of the Multidisciplinary Team, both internally and externally including referring hospitals, GPs, District Nurses and Specialist Nurses across the Network to ensure there is a smooth transition for patients and carers from hospital to the community and vice versa.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, looking after more than 64,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 25% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We are the largest radiotherapy provider in the NHS with one in 20 treatments delivered at The Christie. We have up to 15 linear accelerators operating across our network of sites. We operate the largest chemotherapy unit in the UK on our main site and treatments are also provided at 13 other networked sites, and in patients homes. And as a specialist tertiary surgical centre, we focus on rare cancers, complex procedures, and multidisciplinary approaches to cancer surgery, specialising in colorectal, peritoneal, gynaecological, urological and plastic surgery.
We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We have been named by the UK’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), as one of the best hospitals providing opportunities for patients to participate in clinical research studies, with more than 800 studies open at any time, caring for over 3,000 patients.
• Provide administrative support to the APs/ CNSs.
• Book and outcome telephone clinic appointments
• Maintain the patient Database and ensure all of the information is up to date and accurate
• Order supplies and patient information as requested by the APs/ CNSs. Assist the APs/ CNSs with the management of the patient pathway ie ensuring that appointments have been requested and booked.
• Organise and prioritise the designated workload in order to meet the needs of the service. Assist the APs/ CNS with handover of patient care to other teams in order to facilitate safe and effective transition of care. Communicate effectively with a range of patients and health and social disciplines. This may include a variety of methods, such as electronic or in person.
• Provide a single point of access, including rapid re-entry into the system for those people identified as having urgent or specialist needs.
• Triage telephone and email enquiries, using a risk assessment framework.
• Ensure patients/carers know how to contact the service when their condition / needs have changed, including out of hours.
• Provide general information and support about cancer services, using Trust approved literature. Sign-post patients and relatives/carers to appropriate services such as Maggie’s and Macmillan in order for them to speak to professionals who are able to discuss issues knowledgeably and impartially.
• Demonstrate the ability to recognise situations that require rapid response from a health care professional (AP, CNS or doctor) and respond appropriately. Evaluate outcomes of care delivery with the registered practitioner.
• Act as an advocate and facilitator for patients; linking with APs/ CNSs to resolve any issues.
• Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards.
• Assist the APs/ CNSs with the roll out of Holistic Needs Assessment and electronic patient outcomes (eproms) within the disease group
Professional/Clinical Leadership:
• To act as a role model to colleagues, and be an effective resource to patients, carers and colleagues.
• Support clinical developments and projects to promote excellence in patient care.
• Attend and participate AP/CNS Away Days and Strategy Meetings
• Work within parameters of job description, or as guided by AP/CNS. Seek help appropriately.
Education and Development.
• To participate in annual appraisal and accept personal responsibility for growth and development within the role.
• Ensure compliance with Trust mandatory training.
• Attend educational meetings and conferences, appropriate to the role, in order to keep up-dated with current best practice.
• Together with other professional colleagues, develop information and resources for patients and their carers.
Research and Audit
• Assist APs/ CNSs in audit and evaluation of service delivery and help identify areas for improvement and change
