Summary

A Vacancy at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist with interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia, based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  This is a substantive post to commence as soon as possible.

Interviews for this post will be held in person on 10 November 2026 at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 0QQ. Specific department and venue details will be provided to shortlisted candidates.

Based on the same site as Addenbrooke’s, The Rosie Hospital is a Level 3 maternity and women’s hospital and is the regional centre of excellence for maternity and newborn care. This would be an opportunity to join a group of 13 Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetists in The Rosie Hospital, which sees over 5,500 deliveries per year.

The candidate must be fully registered with the GMC and would be expected to be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.   Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

Our caesarean section rate is 40-45% and we have an epidural rate of around 35%. We run 7 elective caesarean section lists per week. As a tertiary centre and Maternal Medicine Hub, we see a high proportion of high-risk maternity cases and are seeing increasingly complex cases from across the region including women with medical comorbidities, including complex cardiac disease and obstetric complications including abnormally invasive placenta. We have a three bedded obstetric close observation unit, staffed by a dedicated high risk midwifery team, which admits over 60 women per month for Intensive Care Society Level 1 and 2 care. There are currently 6, soon to expand to 8, antenatal anaesthetic high-risk clinics per month and a twice monthly multidisciplinary clinic for women with cardiac disease. We have recently started a monthly anaesthesia follow up clinic in line with the recommendations of the Ockenden report.

As a successful teaching hospital, there is unparalleled capacity for teaching, including involvement in the high-fidelity simulation centre, monthly in-house PROMPT courses since 2019, and for participation in research within the department as well as the wider biomedical campus.

Please refer to the Job description and Person specification attached for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.
