A specialist education setting in Exeter is looking for an enthusiastic SEN Learning Support & Progression Assistant to join its team immediately.
You'll support children and young people with a variety of additional needs while gaining first-hand experience of how specialist education professionals help pupils overcome barriers and make meaningful progress.
You'll work alongside experienced teachers and support professionals, helping pupils participate successfully in education.
You'll:
- Support pupils individually and in small groups.
- Help young people engage with lessons.
- Support needs including Autism, ADHD, SEMH and communication difficulties.
- Adapt your approach to individual pupils.
- Encourage independence rather than creating dependence.
- Develop positive and professional relationships.
- Support emotional regulation.
- Reinforce agreed behaviour strategies.
- Help pupils develop communication and social skills.
- Support activities inside and outside the classroom.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals.
- Contribute observations about pupil progress.
This role can help you develop practical knowledge of:
- Autism and neurodiversity.
- SEND provision.
- SEMH.
- Behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Safeguarding.
- Communication support.
- Individual learning strategies.
- Multidisciplinary working.
It could be particularly valuable for graduates considering teaching, educational psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy or other child-focused professions, as well as those already working in education who want to develop their SEND experience.
You don't necessarily need previous classroom experience.
Relevant backgrounds could include education, care, coaching, youth work, mentoring, children's services or residential support.
What we're looking for is someone who can be patient when progress takes time, remain calm when situations become challenging and build relationships without losing professional boundaries.
You'll need a full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one is also required.
