Summary
THE ROLE
We are recruiting on behalf of a school in Waltham Forest for an experienced and compassionate BSL Teaching Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference for Deaf and hearing-impaired pupils who rely on British Sign Language as their primary means of communication.
You will work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to ensure that pupils have full access to the curriculum, using BSL to facilitate communication, support learning, and promote independence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use British Sign Language (BSL) as the primary method of communication to support Deaf and hearing-impaired pupils in class.
- Work under the direction of the class teacher to deliver differentiated learning support, both in group settings and on a one-to-one basis.
- Assist in adapting lesson resources and materials to make them fully accessible for pupils who are Deaf or have hearing impairments.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence, engagement and emotional wellbeing.
- Liaise with teachers, the SENCO and external professionals (eg. Teachers of the Deaf, audiologists) to ensure a consistent approach to support.
- Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and contribute to reviews and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) where required.
- Promote inclusion and ensure pupils are fully integrated into the life of the school.
- Support with pastoral care and social communication skills development.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Level 2 in British Sign Language (BSL Level 2) - essential
- Previous experience supporting Deaf or hearing-impaired pupils in a school or educational setting.
- Strong understanding of the specific learning and communication needs of Deaf children.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
- Right to work in the UK.
- Two professional references covering the last two years.
DESIRABLE
- Level 3 BSL qualification or above.
- CACHE Level 3 or equivalent TA qualification.
- Experience working with pupils with additional SEN needs (ASD, SLCN, SEMH).
- Familiarity with EHCPs and Annual Review processes.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community.
