Summary

Yard, Fleet & Stores Manager | Watford | Full Time | £30,000–£33,000 per annum

Our client is a well-established specialist construction company based in Watford, Hertfordshire, operating across London and the Home Counties. Established for 40 years, they have an excellent reputation for staff retention, with some members of the team having been with the business for more than 30 years.

They are now looking for a Yard, Fleet & Stores Manager to join their small office and yard team in Watford, supporting a wider workforce of around 50 operatives working across London and the Home Counties.

This is a varied opportunity for someone practical, self-motivated and organised who enjoys taking ownership of their work and getting involved in a mixture of administrative and hands-on duties.

The Role

This is a hands-on, varied role responsible for the maintenance and issuing of tools, PPE and hired plant, deliveries, stock, fleet management, and the general organisation of the yard and stores.

You will predominantly work independently, taking ownership of your workload, prioritising tasks and using your own initiative. You will report to the Contracts Managers and senior management and will work closely with site operatives, suppliers, builders' merchants and the wider team.

The role is Monday to Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, although flexibility is required as some days may involve travelling into London or the Home Counties to collect or deliver items to site from 8:00am.

The company's work is particularly varied. You could be supporting structural repair work at a domestic property one day and assisting with works at a listed or high-profile building such as Windsor Castle or Westminster Abbey another.

Key Responsibilities

• Managing and issuing tools, plant, PPE and stock

• Maintaining tools and arranging PAT testing, servicing and repairs

• Maintaining and updating computer records and spreadsheets

• Updating existing spreadsheets, including entering information and setting target dates for audits and checks

• Managing the company's fleet of cars and vans, including arranging servicing, repairs and replacements

• Ordering and controlling stock and supplies

• Arranging hired tools and plant to site

• Arranging and ordering materials to site

• Liaising with suppliers and builders' merchants

• Arranging maintenance and upkeep of office and janitorial supplies

• Maintaining and organising the yard and stores, ensuring they are clean, tidy and well organised

• Delivering and collecting tools, materials and equipment from sites across London and the Home Counties

• Driving company vans and 3.5t vehicles where required

• Carrying out some general hands-on and practical maintenance work where required

• Supporting the wider operational team with a variety of day-to-day requirements

Requirements

Essential

• Previous construction, plant, yard, stores, trade or relevant builders' merchant experience

• Self-motivated and able to work independently without being micromanaged

• Good common sense and practical problem-solving ability

• Ability to use initiative and take ownership of the role

• Good communication skills and the confidence to deal with suppliers, builders' merchants, site operatives and colleagues

• Organised and able to manage a varied workload and several tasks at once

• Comfortable getting involved in both administrative and practical duties

• Basic IT literacy, particularly Microsoft Outlook and Excel. The spreadsheets are already established, so this is primarily data entry, updating information and setting target dates for audits and checks rather than advanced spreadsheet work

• Full UK driving licence

• Comfortable driving vans and 3.5t vehicles and travelling in and around London

• Willingness to undertake early starts and travel to sites when required

• Within a reasonable commuting distance of Watford

Desirable

• Forklift truck experience or licence – training can be provided

• PAT testing experience – training can be provided

• Experience working for a builders' merchant, such as Huws Gray, Travis Perkins, Lords or a similar business

• Previous experience managing a yard, stores, plant or fleet

What's In It For You

• £30,000–£33,000 salary, depending on experience

• 20 days' holiday plus 8 bank holidays

• Company electric van for travel to and from work and work-related duties

• Contributory pension

• Healthcare scheme

• Sector-specific and general training

• Forklift training where required

• A stable position within a well-established 40-year-old business with excellent staff retention

• The opportunity to work on a genuinely varied range of construction and structural repair projects

The role offers the chance to become an important part of a close-knit business where initiative, reliability and a practical approach are valued. While there is no formal progression route attached to the position, someone who demonstrates the right aptitude and ability could potentially progress into a site management role over time.

Please note: The successful candidate will be required to pass a DBS check.
