What is a Learning Support Assistant?
A Learning Support Assistant (LSA) works closely with the class teacher to support pupils' learning, both within whole-class settings and in small groups or 1:1. LSAs often support pupils with identified learning or additional needs, helping them stay engaged, access the curriculum, and build confidence and independence in their work. It's a hands-on role at the heart of day-to-day classroom life.
Do you need formal qualifications to become a Learning Support Assistant?
• Not necessarily! While a relevant qualification (such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant or LSA qualification) is helpful, many schools will consider candidates with strong experience working with children instead. This makes LSA work a great entry point into education for career-changers, graduates, and parents returning to work.

Experience, Training and Qualifications required for the Learning Support Assistant position:
• Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable but not essential.
• A Teaching Assistant or LSA qualification (Level 2/3), or relevant degree, is a plus, but not required.
• A genuine passion for supporting children's learning and development.
• Patience, adaptability, and strong communication skills.
To be eligible for the Learning Support Assistant position through Refine Education you must:
• Hold Right to Work in the UK
• Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application
• Provide two professional references
