Long Term Futures is recruiting a patient and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in Waltham Forest. This full-time opportunity is ideal for someone with experience supporting young people with special educational needs who is committed to helping every student access learning and achieve their potential.
Working closely with the school's SENCO, classroom teachers, and pastoral team, you will provide targeted support to students with a range of additional needs. These may include autism, ADHD, speech and language needs, moderate learning difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.
You will play an important role in removing barriers to learning, promoting independence, and creating a calm, inclusive environment in which students feel understood and supported.
Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students with special educational needs.
- Support students in accessing lessons, understanding instructions, and completing learning activities.
- Adapt resources and activities to meet individual learning needs.
- Implement strategies outlined in Education, Health and Care Plans and individual support plans.
- Promote students' confidence, independence, communication, and social development.
- Support students with emotional regulation, sensory needs, and transitions throughout the school day.
- Use positive and consistent strategies to support behaviour and engagement.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO, pastoral staff, and external professionals.
- Monitor student progress and provide clear feedback to relevant staff.
- Help maintain a safe, calm, and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Candidate Requirements
- Previous experience as an SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Support Worker, Youth Worker, or in a similar role.
- Experience supporting children or young people with autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, SEMH needs, or other additional needs is highly desirable.
- A good understanding of inclusive education and person-centred support.
- Confident supporting learning and behaviour using a calm, patient, and consistent approach.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Patient, resilient, empathetic, and able to remain calm under pressure.
- A genuine passion for supporting young people with special educational needs.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a wider educational and pastoral team.
- Must hold, or be willing to obtain, an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service.
