Teach at the Stage a Child Is Ready to Learn
A child's age doesn't always tell you where their learning needs to begin.
A pupil may be seven, nine or eleven years old but still be developing the communication, early literacy, numeracy and independence skills usually associated with much younger children.
That's where specialist teaching becomes so important.
A welcoming SEND provision in Hackney is looking for a nurturing and experienced Reception-Level SEND Teacher to lead a small class of KS1 and KS2 pupils working at early developmental stages.
This is a full-time, term-time opportunity with a temp-to-perm pathway, offering the chance to become an established member of a specialist team where progress is understood and celebrated differently.
Start With the Individual - Not Their Age
You'll teach pupils whose chronological age may be very different from their developmental learning level.
That means traditional age-related curriculum expectations won't always be the right starting point.
Instead, you'll consider:
What can this child currently do?
How do they communicate?
What helps them engage?
What is the next meaningful step for them?
Your teaching will focus heavily on areas including:
Communication • Pre-Literacy • Early Reading • Pre-Numeracy • Interaction • Attention • Independence • Personal Development
You'll create learning experiences that are accessible, purposeful and engaging while helping pupils gradually build the foundations for future progress.
What Will Teaching Look Like?
You'll lead a small specialist class with support from Teaching Assistants and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning highly differentiated learning around individual developmental starting points.
- Delivering engaging early literacy and numeracy activities.
- Developing pupils' communication and interaction skills.
- Using practical, visual and sensory approaches to support learning.
- Planning around individual EHCP outcomes.
- Breaking learning into achievable and meaningful steps.
- Creating predictable routines that help pupils feel secure.
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive engagement.
- Encouraging choice-making and greater independence.
- Monitoring progress against individual rather than purely age-related expectations.
- Directing and working collaboratively with classroom support staff.
- Working alongside therapists and other specialist professionals.
- Building positive relationships with families and the wider school community.
Progress Might Look Different Here
Success isn't always completing a worksheet or reaching an age-related academic target. It could be a pupil independently making a choice. Recognising a familiar word or symbol. Counting objects accurately for the first time. Communicating a need without adult prompting. Remaining engaged in an activity for longer. Moving successfully between two parts of the school day. These achievements can be significant milestones - and you'll need to be a teacher who recognises their importance.
Bring Your SEND Experience - And Develop It Further
This role would particularly suit a teacher who already understands specialist education and enjoys finding different routes into learning.
You'll need:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Previous experience within SEND, a special school or specialist provision.
- A strong understanding of early development and developmental learning.
- Confidence differentiating well below chronological age expectations.
- Experience planning personalised learning around individual needs.
- An understanding of EHCPs and individual outcomes.
- Strong classroom leadership and organisation.
- A patient, creative and adaptable approach.
- Confidence working alongside Teaching Assistants and multidisciplinary professionals.
- A genuine belief that meaningful progress should be measured around the individual child.
